Stop recording after 27 or 28 minutes.

Hi, I got a problem with my AG AF100. After 27 or 28 minutes, the camera stop recording automatically and then it continue recording again. This make two videos instead of one. I use a 32 GB SDHC card, more than enough to record one hour. Any idea.

Thanks in advance.

On the SD card there is a maximum file size of 4gb. The files are spanned...

Right, this is not a problem. The AF100 can continuously record for 12 hours, but the SD card will need to break the files up in 4GB increments. No frames are lost.

yep met same problem 4 days ago, client insisted on uncut footage, and that surprise i got after 24 mins. i wonder other card systems like ms have same problems? oh and how about that new technology SD ush or something ..... does it do the same? and how these new cards works with af101?

Every memory card does the same thing. SDHC does it, SD does it, CompactFlash does it, P2 does it, SxS does it, they all do it.

I'm not sure if there is another reason for this but the original 4gb limit explanation given to me was to ensure cross compatibility between platforms. FAT32 is the only file system that both Mac and Windows systems could read and write. FAT32 also happens to have a 4gb file limit.

Otherwise you'd be stuck in whatever platform the original dumping of the footage was done; HFS or NTFS or whatever. It would then be extremely difficult if say the DIT dumps the footage on his windows laptop to an NTFS hard drive and the editor is using a final cut system (or vice versa) to migrate the footage.

No frames are lost, no timecode is lost, it is completely seamless, it just breaks the files into 4gb segments. If you put them back to back on an editing system you would have perfectly smooth playback.

well i definitely lost a few frames, less then a sec but its visible... its like a little jump in the footage and had to use a transaction , normaly i can live it , in fact i dont even think about it, and until now its never bothered me, but with that particular client as its turned out i did not give what he asked....... uncut. but if u say its not possible at all yet, what can we do....

I'm curious about your workflow. The only time I've seen something similar occur is if a fat32 drive was used to archive to, then logged and transferred from. The footage is actually there but the log and transfer function wouldn't properly function...there is a thread or two discussing this somewhere.

If you import the files using the software provided by the manufacturer then the files will get stitched back together with no missing frames. If you just dump the files straight from the card onto your hard drive and then place them on a timeline, there will be dropped frames.

This is because AVCHD uses interframe compression - some frames are full images and are used as a reference point to help build the other frames which record only the changes from the previous frame. When you hit the 4GB limit, odds are it will be on a partially recorded frame. Because it starts on one of those frames and has no reference frame, it can't rebuild the parts that are missing so you end up with dropped frames or red (error) frames on the timeline. However when the manufacturer's software imports these files, it basically tells the clip where the preceeding video file is so it can find the reference frame in needs to rebuild all the frames properly - and viola! - No more dropped frames.

I know a lot of the manufacturers software is PC only, but there are other solutions available for Mac. Being a PC user, I can't tell you anything about them though!

There are absolutely no frames lost in the footage. If your NLE is introducing a glitch or jump, then that's a computer problem. I can guarantee you that the footage is absolutely seamless on the cards, and when used with a compatible computer program, it is absolutely and completely seamless. There are no dropped frames, no drop of audio...

i use my pc for around 2 years and never had problems yet and its pretty powerful i dont think there should be any problems: win7 64bit , I7 950 3.07GHz, 6gb ram, system is on raptor hdd, ati hd4800 gddr5 1024mb,- maybe video card is not the best, but i had no problems yet. What i lost was a head turn - when its stopped the head was turned 1 way, when started it was already other way......, i use SanDisk EXTREME SDHC CLASS 10 (30MB/s) 32GB to record video, anyway as i said it not problem really, normally it would never bothered me...., but i just took 2 peaces of footage and can tell 100% 1st ends with head 1 way, 2nd starts with head other way...

And I can guarantee you that if you put that footage on the card and played it in the camera, you would see absolutely completely seamless frame-accurate perfectly-recorded footage.

Your NLE is introducing the problem. I guarantee it.

Please merge the clips and then look at it: http://vontraining.net/download/

I
know exactly what your experiancing and it has nothing to do with anything other then that the clips has to be merged to heal. And then all the frames are there. :)
