Stop motion animation with a DSLR (e.g. D800)

Hi,

I wonder if anybody on this forum does stop motion animation with a DSLR like D800, or has plan to do it.
If yes, how do you do it ?

The most obvious way is shooting still pictures and combining them into a video file on a computer.
But this seems like too many shutter cycles wasted.

So, what might be a good idea is putting the DSLR into a movie mode, and use stills which you can take while recording a movie to create a stop motion animation.
This way you can save your shutter cycles.

Another idea might be using the HDMI output of D800 and use en external recorder to capture still images. Is there such recorder or computer software capable of stop motion animation ?

Any ideas welcome.

Thanks
Martin
