Has anyone given this any thought? I assume it's possible to simply take a series of stills using the IR remote. But is there any variation of interval recording available, that would allow for triggered rather than timed recording frame by frame to a video file?
I know of no way to take stills onto the video file. It would be cool, but I do not believe it's supported.
Now one can set the camera to take a photo once every 1 second, 10 seconds, 30 seconds, ... (in timelapse mode) BUT I just don't know of a way to know when it took that last image.
However, if one could set it to once every 10 or 30 seconds, you could reach in just after the photo is taken and move something. The biggest problem is knowing when it took the image in timelapse mode.....
I would suggest using any digital still cam or DSLR instead of a video camera for stop-motion. You're results will be much better using a 10MP digital camera, and stunning using a decent DSLR.
To be honest a DSLRs megapixels is overkill for my needs - the HMC40's 1920x1080 exceeds any delivery format I'll be using. And there's mechanical wear on a DSLR's mirror/shutter to consider.
My previous HDV camera connected by firewire cable to a laptop running OnLocation, which provided very nice realtime onion-skinning. I'm sad to have lost that capability with the move to a solid-state cam.
there is a program for mac called Single Framer
maybe you could tether the hmc thru HDMI inputs (somehow)
and use this software to do stop motion...it has onionskinning which is a must in Stop motion animation
