Stolen Equpiment Question

I didn't know where to go with this, but I figured I would post here since I've been posting here lately.

So basically, long story short: In Montreal, shooting fashion shows, on our last day, the car we were driving got broken into, and the hard drives, MacBook Pro, and a some other stuff was stolen.

We filed a police report, and was wondering if there were a couple other ways I should go about trying to recover things, since it was about 6 months of footage on those hard drives, and I've heard there is a GPS in the MacBook Pros, and was wondering how to go about using that to recover it, since basically if the person who stole the MacBook Pro is found, we can find recover the rest of the stuff (Footage, other equpiment), and the footage is the most important thing we need of all the stuff.

Thanks guys, if it's in the wrong spot, I apologize, I just didn't know where else to post it.

No GPS in MacBookPros.....sorry. There's some software you can install in case of theft, that will email you and supposedly allow you to trace it's location via the IP address. But if it's not installed..... sorry

Sorry about what happened to your stuff..... Big bummer.

I've been in business over 20 years and have worked most the world. I've never failed to deliver a job. Yup, I've been stole from.... Lost baggage.... But you have to learn to anticipate the worst.

Anyone who works for me gets introduced to what I call the "Zero Fu-k Up Method"

1- The obvious..... Always have multiple back-up.
2- If that is not possible (raw film) It never leaves my(or staffs) possession (period) Goin to a restaurant..... Club.... Store.....What ever.....film/data goes with us. There are times when 10 of us go out to dinner and one person stays back in a hotel room to baby-sit the film/data and cameras. Now some of you think I'm joking.... Nope! Just ask yourself if you can afford to reshoot..... Nope... not me.... I can't afford my own fee's.

My Zero Fu-k Up Method has many layers for every situation.

GPS is not an answer. Never leave your stuff un protected.

This is not meant to be a rant on the OP. The OP got stung.... And it hurts.... And I'll bet it never happens to him again. He should be thanked for sharing so the rest of us can learn. Even with my "Zero Fu-k Up Method" hearing a story like the OP's.... Makes me want to tighten up my program!

I'd only add to making a backup is - seperating the back ups. One G-Raid drive sits in my camera bag - that is next to me 24/7 during a shoot and my computer laptop bag hidden in the car under beach towels and fake dirty diaper bags while Im shooting.

Or have your assistant carry your backup hard drives in their back pack.

I can only second the post from frisco and add: my insurance does explicitly NOT cover items left in a car! So a car is where I NEVER leave anything, even if the driver stays inside the car and I go out for some minutes.

My car got broken into and none of the camera equipment was stolen.

It was all packed in a dirty-looking ice chest.

Security

Never let stuff in a car. Never uses (if possible) bags who says " hey, this is expensive struff ", Always hide your equipment (camera) when u reach your hotel and be lucky... My assistant is responsable for the security of my equipement.
