Stolen DVX? Possible lead on eBay

Right before I bought my DVX100a earlier this week, I found some DVX100's on eBay http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/ebayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3828508887 - the items (there were three for sale at $3000 though the buyer dropped quickly to $2800 when I they could not "recall" the name of the store where the cameras were purchased ;D) has been removed after I reported it to eBay and to the user who's account was hijacked.

I know Norm reported a stolen DVX and not sure if anyone else had, but you might try contacting eBay and see if they turned up any leads.

When I tried to get information from the illegal seller who had hijacked the account, I had the feeling the units were stolen.

Or it may have just been an outright scam, but you never know.

Re: Stolen DVX? Possible lead on eBay

It looks like I fell into this trap myself... :-[

So here is a warning for others.

I bought a DVX100a from a guy on ebay who had purchased a brand new one and needed to sell it right away for cash. He could not recall the name of the store he bought it from.

His ebay ad said he would overnight the camera. He didn't, of course, and gave me a few lame excuses and now won't return my calls or emails. It's been two weeks now.

The really stupid thing that I fell for was that he said his PayPal account had been hijacked and was closed down temporarily, so I sent the money Western Union. And of course, he's on the other side of the country, so I can't just drive over and see him.

So now I need to get the police involved, etc. In fact, if anyone has a suggestion on this matter, I'm all ears.

His name, in case you happen to come in contact with him, is David Smiddy.

For anyone out there considering a less expensive way to get a DVX100a, learn from my (stupid) mistake: BUY FROM AN AUTHORIZED RESELLER. Preferably a reputable physical store you can drive to and pick up the camera at the time of your purchase.

JUST DO THAT.

There was an ebay auction listed here that might help you, where I guy was auctioning off a butt-whooping, maybe you could send that guy over to your "seller's" house...

Had similar instance where someone kept trying to get me to wire money via Western Union (he was in New York and I'm in California). I told him to shove it and that he was lying about selling a DVX for 1800 bucks. He then faxed me his driver's license...and I was like, but this isn't proof that you are the person on the license. I finally just said to stop bothering me (because by this point he kept telling me that if I didn't wire the money soon I'd lose the deal to someone else...yeah right).

Moral to the story...buy from places you know. If it sounds too good to be true, it most definitely is.
