stock lens slightly loose on body – common problem?

Hi –
every since I got my GH1 a few weeks ago, I've noticed that when the stock kit lens is locked onto the body, it fits very snug but still gives a little, i.e. i'm able to ever-so-slightly turn the lens left and right a bit. Before I go back to the store to have them check it out, I wanted to ask if anyone else has encountered this on their unit…
Just shout out
Cheers…

mine was snug when i first got it. It has now loosened up over time with a slight play which is also present in my C/Y adapter. My c mount is still snug however but I have only used that adapter say 3 times so who knows, it might give abit the more i use it?

Seems to be a common issue though, theres an old thread about a few users who also have "loose" lenses.

Yep, annoying at first considering the cost of the unit, but after a few sessions I don't even notice it anymore. The one area it has been bad is if I'm zooming during shooting and it's really quiet, the mic gains up and you hear a click when you get to either end of the zoom.

thanks for those links.

now that we know this is a common issue, i wonder what can be done about it? it seems to me that it's pretty easy to argue that this issue renders certain functions of the camera unusable. for example: if the faulty moving lens creates a clicking sound that strongly registers on the microphone, this seriously impinges the functionality of the camera as advertised by the manufacturer. might be a case of requesting a replacement before the warranty runs out.

I don't agree. I have never had a clicking sound like that in the microphone. If anybody is zooming so hard they are knocking the lens against the camera body like that then they are doing it wrong.

1) My 20mm 1.7 does not have this play (I think, anyone else?). Is it safe to assume the 14-140mm lens base is slightly off and not the GH1-side mount?

2) Has anyone recently purchased GH1 kit lens without this loose base play? If Panasonic has "fixed" recent copies, then logically older copies are flawed.

Also anyone ever have a Canon/Nikon with a lens base this loose?

i agree. if this started out as a common issue and was later fixed by panasonic, this is reasonable cause for having your unit replaced.
start a poll anyone, does this forum support such things?

mine was a tight fit when i first got it. it has become slightly loose after a fair bit of use and lens changeing. Im talking about less than 1mm in play for me. it is present in my C/Y adapter too so it might be the body and its pin not the lenses?

Mine is also loose. This is a major issue, when you are shooting outdoor with wind. It starts to vibrate at 10 knots windspeed. My plans to shoot windsurfers in Cape Town/SA were flawned by this issue. 90% of my footage went into the trash bin. Maybe I sell the GH1 and by a 7D.

Okay if you are saying that wind is actually vibrating the lens then I would have to see a video to show just how loose that lens is. I can't buy that the wind is actually vibrating the lens. Vibrating the entire camera? Well of course. You have to have a nice sturdy tripod in any wind. Sounds to me like the loose lens is being blown out of context instead of blown by the wind.

that must be one loose lens for it to vibrate. how were you shooting? on a tripod, by hand? what tripod were you using?

I was shooting with a Miller DS10 Tripod. I have to admit, my critic was a bit harsh: Its partly the fault of the geometrics of a DSLR. After all you fix only the body on the tripod. A solution would be Rail-Support for the Lense. But I think the micro4/3 System is particularly vulnerable to wind-vibrations due to the reduced diameter.
