Stills from Sci Fi short and doco

Re: Stills from Sci Fi short and doco

hey han.. this looks pretty good. the stills look oretty cool, i watched short gunfight video, and thought it was a bit too sci-fyish for my personal taste, but it was still very well done. one little thing i would suggest is actaully toning down the opacity of the "laser" effects so that they look a little more organic. but i dont know what sort of look your going for. otherwise it all looked great!

Looks great! Very impressive. Can't wait to see the finished film. Keep us updated and post any production details, if or when you have time :)

Re: Stills from Sci Fi short and doco

Wow, production values are through the roof on this thing. Stuff looks amazing! Please share some info on this production. What are you using for your post effects? Is this color corrected footage? What's your budget?

Thanks.

Re: Stills from Sci Fi short and doco

Thanks all,

I'm editing on Premiere 6 and colour grading most of the footage, trying to give each scene a different colour scheme. We've probbly spent about $1000 NZ on it so far, but most of the money is coming from internet donations by way of the webcomic its based on (www.angels2200.com)

It'll probaby end up being about 3 grand NZ in total.

Everything in the gallery was shot on a DVX

Re: Stills from Sci Fi short and doco

A producer friend of mine just got back from new z... scouting for a location for an upcoming doc I was going to shoot.. his camcorder, wallet, laptop and passport got stolen. Beautiful place, I was hoping to go, but hes a little jaded of going there now, so I doubt it now :(

Complements to your DP.. the lighting is fantastic.

Re: Stills from Sci Fi short and doco

How much is $1000 NZ compared to $1000 US? I just finished a 30 minute short which ran me about $2,800 here in manhattan and can't imagine what those production values would run me here. Then again, from the stills it does just look like a lot of post work shot at some cool locations. Were the locations paid for or guerilla shot?

Re: Stills from Sci Fi short and doco

3,000 New Zealand dollars is just under 1,900 american dollars I think. I have no idea how you shot something that looks that good for so little money.

Re: Stills from Sci Fi short and doco

I think its probably a lot easier to get resources cheap or free over here....beer works as currency a 'lot', and professional crews are very supportive of independent productions. All the locations we've either got in free or had to pay a very small amount ($50NZ being the most so far) We also are relying a lot on our donations. ;)

Theres actually very little post production done on most of the locations (apart from the futuristic cars and the giant monuments)

I just shot a music video this week, also on the DVX....if theres one thing I've noticed, its that at 25p it handles warm colours beautifully, but gets a bit noisy in the blues, especially in low light...anyone else notice this?

Re: Stills from Sci Fi short and doco

I don't think the frame rate has much to do with the color affect. I shot my short in 24pA and had the same problem. The camera loves red (which I believe most video does). I've had the same noise issues in the blues and in low light. It's the limitation of video I believe.
Just checked out the comic stuff. I'd like to hear more about how you raised money through it. If you wander over to my website, I think you'll see why ;D
