Stills from my project-Aids Orphans in Zimbabwe

This was my first project using the DVX100a. I can't say enough about the qulaity of the images and the performance. Considering I didn't get the camera until about 2 days before departing, I was pleased with the results in the field.

For the last grab, what kind of filter did you use, or was it done in camera or post?

Really beautiful images, can't wait to see it!

I really like the 3rd grab.

Michael_Lieberman:

I used a ND Grad and a Polarizer while shooting, and then some color work in FCP HD [slight warming, and some shifting in the black levels.]

I posted the top two images just because I still can't get over the tonal range and detail of the camera. For video, I was totally blown away. I'm a huge DVX100 fan.

What shooting mode were you in for each ? 30p, 60i ?

Just my 2 cents, I think the third shot is way too saturated, almost to the point of breaking up detail. Either don't crank the chroma setting up so high in the camera or lay off the saturation control in your NLE :)

mjhardin,

Are you going to post the video you have, or part of what you are making? I am interested in seeing it. I am actually in the process of planning a trip to Ghana (not definite yet) to make a little documentary of some missionaries over there. Do you have any travelling/shooting advice? What camera case did you use? Any filters? How many batteries did you bring? Any problems?

Thanks.
:)

Reg:
I was shooting in the Regular "24 frame mode" {F5}. Would that be 30p?

Disjecta:
I guess the color was a reaction to the flatness of the light. It looked too much like all the desaturated stuff I see on TV all the time now. I kind of went in the opposite direction. Film and video people seem to not like it, but I used this point as a counter to all of the cold footage that follows. I just went kinda' wacky, but thank you for your honest input.

Kyle_of_Maryland:
I used:
-100DVXa
-2 1600mAh batteries [I found out I needed more-the batteries they sell here at DVXUser.com (3500mAh) are a wise investment-buy as many as you can carry or afford].
-2, 12v lead acid batteries [These saved my life with charging the above batteries].
-A Cavision Mattebox with rod suports, handles and 2 stage filter holder
-4x4 filters: Pola, ND Grad [I didn't use these: Grad Blue, Grad Orange, Soft focus].
-A Heiwa TH-650 tripod with quick release plate and ball head.
-A Sennheiser ME66 capsule/short-shotgun with a Rycote wind screen and pistol grip shockmount
-A Gitzo G-555 Loisir 2-Section Aluminum Boompole
-A Tamarac 697LP7 case
-Lots of adaptors and voltage convertors.
Send me a message here, and I'd be glad to tell you more thoughts and suggestions.

Can you throw in some clips?? that would be great to see some of those stills in action. Btw nice grabs, in particular the second one and the lastone..to me it seems little too saturated as well if used with the first two grabs. not sure how you plan to edit it and combine it but it might look little odd. Just a suggestion. :)

In terms of going through the airport, does the xray machine hurt the camera footage or where you alright?

Re: Stills from my project-Aids Orphans in Zimbabw

The footage wasn't affected by the x-rays. It's a good thing, because I didn't have a choice.

Nice work. How did you do the 16:9? Are you planning to go to big screen?

davidblumenfeld:

I just shot it "letterbox" in a regular 4:3 aspect ratio. Somewhere in the back of my mind, I'd like to transfer to film, but the primary use for now is video presentations for fund raisers.

Everytime it has screened it has been projected, so you get the 16:9 feel. There's something about the "Golden Mean" that's pleasing to the eye.

The non-profit I was shooting for bought the equipment, I just donated my time and travel expenses. When you look at the cost of an anamorphic lens adaptor, verses feeding orphans-letterbox is a good compromise artistically, and sound judgement in regard to physcal resposibility. It made sense to cut a few corners to keep the cost down.
