Stills from a movie set...

Last night our feature moved locations once again, this time to a large empty warehouse downtown. As always I brought my DVX along. Here are some random stills I pulled. Nothing special. Just running around trying to keep warm (It has been unusually cold for the last few weeks here in LA). Enjoy.

Re: Stills from a movie set...

I know these are night pictures but these are insanely dark on my monitor (my monitor has been calibrated).

Re: Stills from a movie set...

What feature are you working on?

Oh yeah, and people in LA should never complain about the temperature. ;D

Re: Stills from a movie set...

Yeah the iris is all the way open. Doesn't look that dark on my laptop (not calibrated), sorry bout that. Can't tell you the title yet. Soon.

i recently learned a lesson on monitor calibration. it is very easy and simple. use your color bars in your NLE and find instruction online.

Re: Stills from a movie set...

I'm curious, did you only use available light for the first and second to last grabs? Or did you use a lighting kit (if so, what kind)?

I have not bought a DVX yet and I have a number of night scenes in my script. I am very interested in what this camera is capable of in low light.

Thanks!

Does this guy not look like Billy Joel?[/quote]

"Uptown cam! The DVX is such an Uptown cam!"

;D

Re: Stills from a movie set...

Well, at least on my monitor, the first grab looks very filmic to me. Looks like it could be a scene in a feature.

Re: Stills from a movie set...

Alright, I played with the photos in VEgas to increase brightness. And damnit. I want to know what film this is. Whats up with this dude being all jacked up in the frame? IS it a Zombie film? A Jurassic 4 film? What?!

That dude is so messed up!

you're going to need alot of light in 24p mode.

He fell off a ladder.

Not a zombie film. A very dark action noir drama. It has a lot of violence in it tho.

No lighting kit, all available light. The stuff from the set is lit from the set lighting.

If you are planning on shooting a feature on DVX (we are actually shooting ours on the Sony Cinealta), you must light just like you would for film. This camera does not handle low lighting very well (at least not as well as my XL1, which could shoot in near black conditions), however if lit properly it will yeald one of the better filmic images.

Re: Stills from a movie set...

Interesting - just watched this on a different (uncalibrated) monitor and the pics look much better and much more clear... so maybe it's possible to brighten this a tad in post ;)

Re: Stills from a movie set...

Hi gang, worlds colliding here...I didn't know until the other day that tmon was posting pix from the set. I'm the DP on this movie. I wish we could show you the actual frame grabs, we're getting some beautiful stuff. The Cinealta is treating us OK--the number of cables and the big engineering station is a bit ponderous to deal with (sometimes I think longingly of the simplicity of shooting with my Mini35/DVX setup) but the results are worth it. I'm using a Hot Gears setup that motorizes the Arrihead so that I can operate the camera remotely the whole time, which allows me to work off the 20" HD monitor at the engineering station rather than the viewfinder. Perhaps I'll try to get some stills of that setup for y'all.
