Still using DVX100 Andromeda?

Aside from the obvious difference in DOF between sensor sizes, RAW is still RAW off any sensor and allows you to get more dynamic range from the "camera" (providing of course that the bit-depth of the ADC reading the sensor and file recording format are decent) plus RAW-capture offers unadulterated images typically limited by wimpy 8-bit MPEG based consumer codecs and REC709 color space.

I don't think it was any secret back in 2003 when Juan first started his hack for the DVX100 that manufacturers were purposely limiting digital data in order to capture it on tape plus of course protect its higher end market of products. The Nikon D1 DSLR released in 1999 could capture RAW and it was making pretty images,. the Sony F900 video camera meanwhile was over $100k (used by George Lucas to shoot Star Wars in 2003) and Sony had it's heavy duty HDCAM SR codec capable of 4:2:2 or 4:4:4 RGB with a video bit rate of 440Mbit/s.

Juan was an Electronics Engineer and found it incredibly limiting that prosumer cameras were using 5:1 or higher compression, 8-bit, mostly 4:1:1, and that there was no option to output an "uncompressed" signal for external capture. Cameras had firewire in order to transfer off footage, but he questioned why an option for a higher quality output couldn't be included. When he suggested it publically on forums he often took slack from others condemning the idea due to how much data would be generated and how much storage would be needed to hold it all.

With the only camera being close to what he wanted costing over +$100k Juan's venture of hacking a $3750 DVX100 camera even if voiding warranty was in fact cheap and he didn't give up on his pursuit. Juan's first announcement of a successful "RAW" capture from the DVX100 was on January 24th 2004 on DVINFO.net and many people were excited about it. Remember the RED camera's weren't even announced yet, they didn't exist, so again this was going to be the cheapest new "RAW" camera on the planet and even after RED did announce the RED ONE camera there was still a lot of demand for Juan's hack nicknamed Andromeda.

Hey, guys, just had a passing curiosity about the old DVX100 Andromeda system recently and from what I can see it's almost like it was never there. The old forums are gone and hardly anybody is selling theirs on auction sites or even in the Marketplace sections of various filmmaking messageboards. I was just wondering if anybody was still using the Andromeda system for anything or if anybody knew where to look for some sort of usergroup site I could look into. It's strange, during my search I did come across an auction site where one sold for about $300 and it was just one of those "Aw man!" moments, if only I'd noticed a couple years ago! XD

I just wondered how the system held up with today's technology and new developments like high end tablet computers and SSDs. Even though the resolution was only 720p it was still RAW 4:4:4 from a quality videocamera.

Well it looks like this guy has one, he's planning a shoot with one and looking for help:
