Still the best DVX footage I've yet seen...

I think I've seen all the vid/graps in this forum and still I don't think they beat the clip here

http://www.ladyxfilms.com/theater/e15/episode_15.shtml

...especially in the coffeeshop (the DP seems to know his freakin' stuff here)...but then it also might help that these guys seem to be able to act...Episode 4 was also done on a DVX but is pretty much only worth notice due to what is probably the worst martial arts fight *ever* committed to tape...

Re: Still the best DVX footage I've yet seen...

That footage is first rate... I saw that a couple weeks ago and the ONLY thing that bugged me about it was I felt the "computer geek" was the weak link in the overall acting. It was a pretty darn good effort... a definite standout from most of the others... so that's the only reason I'm picking on the one guy who would've been the BEST actor in some of the other ones.

Hey if you want to see something of a different flavor, but still amazing from a dvx user then go to ryantown.com and watch the "boyfriend" video... it's not what you think, it's freakin' amazing. It's like an SNL skit... even better is the making of it. You'll crap at how much work this guy did... I've been emailing him and I bought the dvd just to pay him due respect... but you gotta' watch it.

Re: Still the best DVX footage I've yet seen...

I agree. That DP/Director knows his stuff. I believe he is a professional photgrapher. It really shows the level one can achieve with the DVX.

Shows what great LIGHTING and COMPOSITION can do. I could really have done without the MUSIC VIDEO appraoch though... kind of corny.

Makes you realize HOW MUCH is involved in putting together a project; pre-production, lighting, talent, editing, music, etc etc etc.

Re: Still the best DVX footage I've yet seen...

Yeah I'm primarily taken with the coffeshop part of it...that's come closer to the film look than anything I've seen so far from the DVX, although the loft bedroom part at the end was well-lit too for the lowlight situation...the music video aspect probably has something to do with the actors actually being the band that provided the soundtrack...so not bad acting at all from a bunch of mostly musicians...and yeah Matt, I saw the gayboyfriend vid, really cool/funny stuff there :)  The render time stuff like that must've taken always sends shivers down my spine though :p

Re: Still the best DVX footage I've yet seen...

Yeah, I checked it...like I said, you know I wanted to make sure I had seen everything thing in this particular forum before I said anything, and, having seen that Art History trailer again at your suggestion, well...ok, the Gym shots have a nice amber Michael Bay thing happening, I give you that, and the nighttime stuff I give respect too, seems like lighting at night or in dark situations must be the bane of cinematography...so all that stuff is great material to be sure...just some of the hallway shots with that same amberish glow and the closeups of the two guys staring at each other outside, I think the big guy is that comic character actor who's been on Who's Line is it...those particular scenes looked video-ey to me...all I'm saying is the that Lady EX short, again specifically in the coffeeshop, is primo (now *that's* some cam settings I'd like to know :p)...but that's just me talkin'......you guys are the pros :-)

Re: Still the best DVX footage I've yet seen...

Honestly...I didn't think that LadyX looked FIRST RATE...I thought it still looked kind of amateurish.

It was good but I mean, seriously, it wasn't WOW and didn't blow me away.

I think the stealart trailer was better as well, and I think the video that guy made for the PS2 racing game and the "My Gay Boyfriend" music video had more 'film-like' images.

Re: Still the best DVX footage I've yet seen...

Ok, the Man behind the Motion stuff looks good. I love the Gay Boyfriend video but I dunno about how film-ish it looks. And, while some of the Art History stuff is good, I still think bits of it, like the outside stuff and the museum part, is immediately obvious that it's vid. So I guess, so far...the Lady X coffeshop bit and the Motion Man stuff are my favs thus far. Hey, but what do I know? :P Call me Joe $10-movie-ticket, the Lay man.

Oh hey...what would you guys say is a good dvd-based lighting primer? I wanna get a handle on this and ya gotta start *somewhere*.....and I don't wanna bug everyone here indefinitely, lol...thanks

Re: Still the best DVX footage I've yet seen...

LOL BWhahahah! I had never seen the MOCAP reel. Man, that made me laugh. It made this otherwise lame ass day worth it! Okay, okay, maybe I'm exaggerating, but it was funny, and it did make me laugh and it was very well done. :D

Stealart still looks kick ass. Sides, it's hard to judge stealart when it hasn't been released yet. Isn't it still in POST? The LADYX was very good, but lets wait for STEALART's offical release before we try and judge the two side by side.

Anyway, mocap = funny.

Re: Still the best DVX footage I've yet seen...

Btw is it only me or does anybody else find the "default Lady-X intro" that the uhm flange ;) on every of the shorts somehow well... a bit crappy?! ;-)
On this particular shorts: you know.. we "techies" (or even geeks hehe) are always on the hunt regarding all the technical aspects of _the_ film/movie look.. but it's really good actors that make you forget you're whatching some DV short/movie... and of course good framing and cutting/pacing! And I thought the actors were really good on this one...

Cheers,
-Sören

Re: Still the best DVX footage I've yet seen...

I agree. It seems "generically video like" (That's my technical description). I would like to see a cleaner intro (ala James Bond) and more emphasis on the LADYX as in hot chick. :o

Re: Still the best DVX footage I've yet seen...

So was this Iriakhem shot with a DVX 100? Very stylized look (lighting person and DP gets kudos). The story line doesn't do much for me, but you gotta love the James Earle Jones sound-a-like voiceover! :P[tt] what does this effect do?[/tt]

Re: Still the best DVX footage I've yet seen...

IF that was shot with the DVX, it only stokes me more! The editing of the trailer was super skills. I was laughing at the JEJ sound alike. Everything in this trailer was A + except for the actual dialog script. You know, less is more?

Re: Still the best DVX footage I've yet seen...

I've seen those before, and...yeah they're good, but neither one was shot on a dvx100 *shrug*

Re: Still the best DVX footage I've yet seen...

The point was,you don't neccessarily need the "latest and greatest" in order to succeed with any project.
I've seen DVX100 stuff that looked like straight up amateur video-In 24p! It ain't the gear-it's the person.

"Iriakhem" was shot on a Sony TRV30
"Girl Boy" was shot on an XL1
