Still slightly confused about editing and shooting 24P

Ok, I'm buying a DVX100b.

I am currently using Pinnacle 12 to edit. Pinnacle doesn't do the take down thing for 24P afaik.

I don't have the money at the moment to buy the DVX100b AND and a new editing software like Premiere which is like 500 or 600 dollars.

So, where does that leave me? Can I still shoot 24P and edit the footage on Pinnacle, but just not shoot 24PA?

If not, then what's the cheapest NLE I can get that will edit on 24P footage?

I really don't need anything fancy. I need cuts, dissolves and maybe the occasional wipe. More than two sound tracks would be nice, but I can even get by without that.

I may do the film festival thing at some point, but the main goal is stuff that goes straight to youtube and Vimeo.

I do understand the "NLE choice is subjective, you need to pick the one that's right for you" etc. advice. But what I'm asking is what are my options if I am shooting in 24P on the DVX100b?

At the moment I really don't care about 24PA because I am not going to film, and I am not going to DVD.

If you are like me and your NLE cannot remove the 2:3:3:2 pulldown of 24pA and it only edits in a 29.97 fps timeline, then shoot 24p and edit away. The 2:3 pulldown of 24p is designed specifically to work on a standard 29.97 timeline. I shoot everything at 24p and edit on Adobe Premiere Elements 3.0, which has only a 29.97 timeline. 24pA is for editing on NLEs with 23.97 timelines.

24p edited on a 29.97 timeline looks just fine, especially when you're working on a tight budget and cannot afford to upgrade to an expensive NLE running on an expensive computer.

If you want to see what 24p looks like edited on "bargain basement" NLE with a 29.97 timeline, I have a couple on YouTube:

Sounds like the best option to me. Maybe its possible to upgrade from elements to pro later as well? Check adobe site.

yes, shoot 24p
24p is for 29.97 timeline editing (standard)
24pa is for 23.97 timeline editing
