Hello,

I'm a photojournalist and event photog in transition to documentary film making with a 5dm2. I will be capturing audio from interviews indoors and nat sound outside. I can also see myself using two cameras during an interview soon. Can I get some opinions on which recorder to purchase? Thanks.

1. Save some cash and head ache for synching.

Juicedlink ft454 into camera during one camera situations.

Juicedlink dt454 into edirol r-09hr (for nat sound or with a clap board in a two camera interview scenario.)

Or

Sound Devices 702

Thoughts?

If you have the budget for a SD702, then Juicedlink and Edirol shouldn't even be in the equation. The Sound Devices recorders are top-notch, and assuming that you have a couple of good mics (and the necessary accessories, and the proper mic-handling technique), it should give you what you need. Recording straight to a 5DmkII is a bad idea, as the audio support on DSLR cameras is still pretty lousy. Recording externally does, of course, require syncing the audio files to the video files in post, but that's not really as big of a deal as some folks make it out to be. You may want to add a RODE VideoMic to your 5DmkII in order to record decent scratch audio for syncing purposes.

Now, since I get the impression that you're fairly new to audio for video, you might want to check out the stickies at the top of the Audio forum. They have lots of good information on mics and all sorts of other topics. And check out the Sound for Film and Television DVD available in DVXUser's store.

Welcome!

The Juicedlink DT454 is actually a good unit, if you must record into your 5D. As C2V (who knows his stuff) pointed out, DSLR audio input is pretty limited so far. Even if you were running through a top end mixer before, you're still putting the signal into a camera with poor pre-amps.
Syncing doesn't have to be the headache it was, as there's programs out there now like Pluraleyes that really do a lot of the work for you.
So, basically your best bet is to run a mixer into an external audio recording device, especially when considering going multi-camera in the future.

If the choice is between a 702 and Juicedlink/Beachtek kit there's really no choice. The SD gear is superior in every imaginable way.
