GH2 Still Photography with the GH-2 Can't Touch Canon / Nikon

Guys,
since we are talking about stills, when using an adapted lens, how do you "pre-judge" exposure?

Constant preview doesn't seem to operate with an FD, the same way that it does when using a panny lens.

I owned a 7D for a year and it drove me nuts with constant overheating. I could barely shoot for five minute sometimes. After I'd been shooting for an hour or so, even intermittently, it would start cutting out after a minute or two. Towards the end of that year, I'd have to hit record twice for every new shot because after the first press, it would run for only five seconds and then stop - but the second press would have it going for a few minutes just fine.

But even besides that, I just generally hated that camera. Canon is going to have to do something pretty amazing to ever lure me back from M4/3.

That sounds like buffer overflow from a slow card, not overheating.

It wasn't the card. I don't remember what kind of card it was but it was the same card several of my buddies used with no problems. I think that Canon manufactures their sensors to be only within error tolerances, not identical (like how CPUs are made) and thus some sensors will overheat more than others in the same model. Not all Canon's overheat as often as mine, but I see no reasons to go back to that system since I'm so happy with M4/3 anyway.

Have you tried pressing the the lower left button on the back (beside the trash icon) then the "display button"? Does that give you an exposure preview?

constant preview works for me. are you in Manual mode? it wont work on aperture or shutter prirority.

OK, I'm there... thank you!

I think my C1 saved setting may have been created on "A". On C1, hitting the 2 buttons work. On manual, constant preview works great.

'ppreciate it!

In regards to Panasonic GH2 photography, what is the best way to use a flash off camera? GH2 doesn't have wireless control from what I know, so what is a good device with the GH2 to set off the off camera flash wireless? What option is there to do it with wired also?

I have this flash for my GH2 currently:
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/744456-REG/Metz_MZ_50312OPL_mecablitz_50_AF_1_TTL.html

Also for GH2, what have you guys found is a good picture profile? Smooth? Vibrant?

I am in the same boat and bought a similar flash. You have two options:
1. trigger via slave sensor - turn down the flash on the GH2 and redirect it via a white card, if needed, away from subject and towards the flash... the Metz will trigger.
2. Buy a $30 remote trigger

The Olympus and Panasonic higher end flashes ( Olympus FL-36R and FL-50R, Panasonic DMW-FL360 and DMW-FL500 ) can be used with a TTL cable that enables the camera to control the flash when off the camera. Your Metz flash can probably do the same thing with an electronic hot-shoe extension cable. ( Olympus FL-CB05 hot shoe cable has the same electrical connections as the camera shoe ) I've even used the TTL feature of the Olympus FL-50R flash with my tiny Panasonic LX-5 pocket camera ( the flash is twice the size of the camera ) and it worked beautifully.

For Olympus's new OM-D / E-M5 camera they are introducing a wireless FL-600R TTL flash, and this will likely work with multiple flashes, which would be very cool.

Forgot about that. Thanks.

I only ever shoot RAW, and yes, its still bloody noisy.

Yup, I agree, the GH2 jpeg is dire, probably the worst out there.

Having said all that, its cracking for video !

Have you tried shooting in RAW format with your GH-2 ?

I absolutely hated the photos from my GH-2 until I bought Adobe LightRoom and started to ONLY shoot in RAW format. ( the GH-2 Jpeg engine isn't very good )

i dont believe that expert photographers and videographer man are doing flame here
all of you who are fighting know that the best shot will depends on your sense
2011 best photoes come from fujifilm old cameras
the second third one was from old canon 40d and something like this
there was no nikon d3x or d3s or 5d MKII in the first states
why?
because this is not important what is your camera it is important what you sense and whats your view
i have canon 450D + Tamron 18-250 (NO IS) + Canon 430 EX II

i always took very sharp images indoor with handheld

when you search on google you may find some terrible worse samples of 5D but sometime you see trough old camera come some best scenes

i wanna buy gh2

but i know it more better than my 450D not 100% sure

the low iso peformance on gh2 you can solve buy buying a flash or fast lenses like 20mm f/1.7
there is nothing tofight
and there is nothing to bias or fight for
this is a sample of my work in raw convereted to jpg
all of them handheld with tamron 18-250 without IS

Given the title, I hesitated before reading this thread because I thought it would rapidly degenerate into a flame war, but except for somebody throwing the bs flag once or twice :-), this has been a very educational thread - and reminds me why I like dvxuser so much.

It was especially inspiring to see what people like John Flores and Tom Preska have done professionally with the GH2 as a still camera.

For what it's worth, my first DSL was a Nikon, and my first video-capable DSL was a Canon T2i. I loved the stills straight ooc on both cameras, but I hated the video on the Canon.

I replaced the T2i with a GH2, and, of course I loved the video, but was 'meh' on the stills (white balance never seemed right and the colors were dull).

But that was a year ago - I had to work at it, but now my GH2 JPEGs are good enough straight ooc that I've stopped missing the Canon.

And before you guys tell me I ought to be using RAW and pp software - sadly, I'm too lazy and cheap for that ;-)
