Still photography bellows compendium as matt box?

Would a stillphotography compendium do as a makeshift mattbox? My first impression is that they're very similar. Mine has fittings for a vignetting mask in the front. I'm thinking of making some barn doors that could fit in those fittings. They main problem as I see it is that it has a 1:1 aspect ratio and might not being as effective in reducing stray light because of it. Also not very good for wide angles. On the plus side, it has got a 77 mm filterring attachement and thus let's me use it without the need of rails (newbie with no real budget for my videoendavour).

Thoughts?

Mamiya used to make a bellows hood (I still have one). It had a tiny, locking rack & pinion to extend the bellows which was cool, and a gel filter slot.

If you're using a rail system you might come up with some way to support the open end. I'd just buy an Indian matte box though - I got one as an interim solution when I started messing with DSLRs... 3 years ago and never needed to upgrade. You get rotating filter stages, etc.

I've got a mamiya actually. And one from sinar, but that's rather boxy. I will use the mamiya one.
