Is it possible to take still photo's with this camera? I see a photo button on the remote, but don't know how it works.

Anyone know?

Re: Still Photo DVX 100A

As far as I'm aware, you can't take stills with the dvx. The only option I'd see would outputting a single frame from a video capture. I'm sure I'll be corrected if I'm wrong.

Re: Still Photo DVX 100A

You are correct, there is no provision for taking stills. If you're in 30P mode, every shot you take is technically a still... but no, there's no seperate "digital still camera" feature.

The "photo" button on the remote does nothing with the DVX. Panasonic makes their accessories cross-compatible across their product line, so that same remote is packaged with many different cameras, including those that have still-photo capability.

Re: Still Photo DVX 100A

I love owning a camera that doesn't dumb itself down with features that I'll never use, and things that embarrass me by simply being there (digital zoom?) :)

Re: Still Photo DVX 100A

Uhm.. with Vegas i make stills of video all the time. now i must say they are not like these nice 4 + megapixel cameras.. but.. it will suffice for some web applications.

Re: Still Photo DVX 100A

yeah.. remember its a progressive image so every frame of video is like a still photo, just a low rez photo. anything printed over 2" will look like crap.

NOrmally true jared, however, if you have the know how, DVX footage blows up wonderfully.  Just last night I made a nice looking 3.5x6 inch print that looks way better than most 2MP cameras that I have seen.  The colors are clean, no digital noise.  I used S-spline to blow up the photo, than I adjusted the curves and levels a little bit more in photoshop, added a slight film grain effect, used an unsharpen mask (very slight), desaturated the photo a little bit, and set that puppy to print (I work at a photography studio, we have a Noritsu photo processing station) actually looks way more like film than any other digital photo I've seen come through here.

Re: Still Photo DVX 100A

In fact, I figured I would put my money where my mouth is and give you this link to this photo.  This is from my wifes graduation yesterday, my wife isn't in the photo, don't know who the dude is. http://www.stefweb.net/Gradphoto.jpg
Oh BTW, this photo has been setup as a print, therefore it might look slightly grainy for the screen, however when printed out it looks much better.
One more thing, make sure you look at it in full resolution, it is probably larger than your screen resolution, unless your working at 1600x1280.  You might have to zoom in slightly.
OH, and yes, I know, the guys hair is blown out, it was wicked sunny yesterday, and I was all over the place with my exposure.
This was shot in 24Pn with a 1/48 shutter speed, 1/8th ND filter @f5.6. This was also shot in squeezed mode, so I sure that if I had an ANi adapter it would look even better.

Re: Still Photo DVX 100A

yes... of course if you are a pro you can make something like that.. but you need to know what your doing and have the software to do it. I think this was a little more advanced than the photo mode the poster was originally asking for.

Very nice blowup btw.. I wonder how well a dark scene would look at that size.

I did that just the other day. Picked up a Nikon D70. Love it!

I have canon still gear and would love to be able to afford a canon EOS 10D or even 1D but I spent all the spare cash on another camera ;D

The DVX if your wondering :)

Re: Still Photo DVX 100A

I was giggling to my self about how much time he put into that single stilll frame with all of the rendering with PS etc..... Of course i imagine you would do the same or similiar adjustments with a still camera as well..

That image kicked ass...I am not sure but the film grain you put on it in PS seemed a little on the extreme side but gave it a great feel. I really think it looks sweet. I can't believe that is from the DVX...very nice!

Re: Still Photo DVX 100A

Nikon rocks! I have the 5700 and a D70 I take out on shoots with me! I love stills on set!

Re: Still Photo DVX 100A

I would completely agree with the still camera idea. I really wouldn't use that still for anything, exept for showing how well the dvx can blow up. As far as still cameras go, I still shoot all film, I just find it easier to work with. My boss has a Nikon d100, and that thing is pretty sweet, I imagine the D70 is as well. As for the grain, it is definatly extreme, however, it looks better that way when it is printed out, infact, you don't see the grain at all when it is printed. Less grain than that and the image would look soft.

What is S-spline?
