Still doing it at 50....

saw PE and Digital Underground in 92 or 93 back in harrisburg. went home that night and made a horror movie with the guy who i would one day co-found sabi pictures with.

Wow Zak. Now that's great story. Nice.

I'm guessing we'll never see Chuck D on a TBS sitcom like ol' Ice Cube...
I think Cube is a family man now and wants to hit that market. Besides, it's only so hard you can be when you're so far from the ghetto right now. LOL. Then again I could see Chuck D doing it, but it would probably be more intellectual like "All in the Family" was.

That would be so awesome lol. I would like a time machine enabled crossover with All In The Family actually!

I thought this was part of the "For Married folks only" thread...I admit I stopped listening to rap sometime around Run DMC. I realize by saying this I probably lost whatever blackness credentials I may have had.

French, Cuban and Mexican rap is the best anyway. Much more interesting and distinctive than much of anything being done over the last 20 years in the USA, IMO.

I don't think I ever had any blackness credentials in the first place so I'm not risking much, by saying so...

Yeah, I like early stuff too and I have plenty of Black credentials.

I like how early rap seemed to have a direct line to funk and R&B. Seems like that thread has been broken. Just like in Rock music where Rock of the 60s and 70s had very direct ties to blues.

You know, I think you hit upon why most of the stuff I've heard over the last +/- ten years impresses me as uninspired meh-u-lence.

It can't stand on its own. It doesn't *have* that connection to earlier forms any more, at least, generally not very obviously, and what's left doesn't have the stuff to be worth very much of anything by itself.

Part of that PE rap talks about that. The new artist are in it just for the money. Music is just a marketing tool now. Buy this new artist-line of whatever. Paris Hilton could take a dump and with the right song, enough auto-tune, the right guest rapper (I'm thinking Li'l Wayne) and a decent video she could sale a line of designer crap. "Paris Drops: The Scent of Success".

And off topic, but Wu Tang was brought up: Return to the 36 Chambers is one of my favorite albums. :-HeadPhones(D:-HeadPhones(D:-HeadPhones(D:-HeadPhones(D

I'm working backwards. I grew up on all the hip-hop stuff in the 80's as a teenager. Now when I discover soul/funk from the 60's and 70's I hear all the little samples. Can you blame me? I mean, why would a 16 year be listening to Minnie Ripperton, Frankie Beverly or RAMP in 1988?

I remember hearing 'you're gonna get yours' for the first time on Capitol Radio in the UK. I had to hit the record button and just kept playing it for days on end. Thanks for taking me back!

Still going strong

One of the best videos you won't see. Old school PE, almost 20 years ago (OMG I feel old). These are real videos, not that 50 Cent "I'll Kill You" BS.

Black Steele in the hour of Chaos is the best video ever!

Even the video direction is better. There's a whole story told here. Sheeesh, making me miss the nineties and mid eighties. BTW, here's a hilarious Flava Flav story as recounted by Chuck.
