My focus ring on DVX has gone all stiff for some reason.. DOP put tape all over it grrr

I took the lens hood off and took out the 2 tiny screws... is it safe to remove the 4 sunken screws after that and will this allow me to take of the focus ring to find out what's causing the friction?

Anyone help please

cheers :)

I removed the screws and put some oil based lube on the focus ring.. any idea what the white stuff is that was on there before?

cheers

Funny Beno, but I had to do the same thing over the weekend, it wasn't by choice, I dropped the camera and the lens came off exactly like how you have yours.. I was able to put it back together.. so yeah it's same to remove the screws, but I don't remember seeing any white stuff.. unless it splattered somewhere....

I was so nervous taking putting that thing back together. So did the oil work, is the focus ring smoother now.. because my ring is not how it used to be, it's a little tight so I'm hopping the oil thing is a good idea.

You dropped it and the whole front came off :/ sounds traumatic.

When you take the four countersunks out the focus ring comes off but with some other **** attached to it.. there's 3 more tiny screws on the back. . I unscrewed those and that reveals the white lube in the tracks which the focus ring runs on and the parts seperate out into 3 different rings.

first I tried KY jelly, it worked a bit for about 20 seconds then it went really stiff again.

I rang up a panasonic service company and you can buy a new focus ring here in the UK for about £30 including delivery. They said that in their experience adding more lube never helps because once it goes stiff it means the tracks are ****ed.

So I though I may as well slap a bit of bearing oil in there and if it didn't work I could just buy a new ring set.

So for now it's smoother than when I got it. Hopefully there will be no long term re percussions but if there is I'll just buy a new ring set.

Obviously just make sure if you do use oil it ain\t going to react with plastic. Unless anyone else can suggest a reason why this is a BAAD idea.

Yeah, you have no idea.. when that thing fell.. I felt my heart falling with it.. but I had to remain calm around my crew because we still had filming left.. luckilly though the camera still worked.

It took me forever to put that thing back together I was so confuse with the screws and counterparts and stuff... so just the ring cost 30 pounds huh, that's pretty good.. how about the Actuall Lenscap itself... the Lens is ok.. but that whole thing around the lens is messed up... how much is that.. I'll just finish the last weeks of filming and get that thing fix... but I'd say we both are pretty brave souls taking that DVX apart like that.. very brave.. I'd be scared to do it again...
