Sticky Focus Ring in the cold...

Anyone else having this problem.

Right now in MN its like -5 in the twin cities and I'm headed to the deep north tomorrow where windchills won't be over -20 for the rest of the week to shoot some snocross stuff and I'm a bit worried about the sticky focus ring. Never had this problem with any other cameras I've used in the cold.

I know Horner has the same problem with his, I was finally able to test mine outside in cold cold cold weather yesterday...it is a very very noticeable stick.

Wondering if there is a solution to this?

Thanks!

Yeah, I had mine out in about 6 degree temps the other day and it was a lot harder to turn.
Felt like I was trying to turn the zoom ring with the servo motor locked on but it was the focus ring.

Had my HVX-200 in minus temps and it wasn't this hard to turn.

same here - 30's in SLC - warmed right back up coming inside but haven't seen that with another cam before. Still a rockin' cam though.

I've shot down to -30C, and it was a bit sticky but still functioned properly. It's just the grease thickening in the cold.

mine did it too at exactly 32 degrees...

kind of unbelievable really...

Same here with my recently bought HMC150... 32 deg out.. came out for less than 5 minutes.. focus ring jerked when I engaged the ring.. Impossible to pull off a smooth focus move.

Solid-state cam - durability being a selling point? Hardly thus far..

That's weird. I shot some stuff this winter (in Canada) with my hpx170 at -15 and -20 celsius and the focus ring wasn't getting stiff to the point of being hard to pull off a smooth focus. It was a bit more stiff than when shooting inside though, but not to the point of being any kind of issue. Am I the only one whose focus ring works fine in cold weather?

Gabriel: I think what we're saying is the ring turns smoothly once the ring has overcome the inertia at stand-still... Do you mean your ring never developed the problem where you have to give it a strong push to start it turning?
