Steve Mullen has a lot of info on this camera at http://www.gyhduser.com and he had this to say about the split screen "I've believed, and I think others also believe, that the split-screen problem is related to high levels of gain. If this were true, the split-screen problem could be avoided by not using high gain levels.
It may be that JVC has suggested this to be the case -- or they hope it is the case. BUT IT'S NOT.
The fact is that the split-screen problem can be "provoked" at any gain above zero. So it can't be fixed by keeping gain low.
What provokes it?
Anything that causes the image to be sub-optimal coming from the CCD. I found two things -- which boil down to one."
I was wondering if him and Barry had any contact. I believe they tested this camera together originally right? Or am I off the mark here?
