stepping up to HVX

so... I'm doing a promotional video for a photographer later this month. I own a DVX and all the bells and whistles and all that with sound and lighting. Anyways, the couple and I tossed around the idea of renting an HVX for the shoot because they would like HD and don't mind picking up the rental fee. So my question is will I have much trouble going from a DVX to an HVX, isn't the HVX basically the DVX with HD capabilities? I know I will have to deal with a P2 card, how do you capture from a P2 card? Will a MBP with 2.33 GHz and 2 GB ram be enough for editing HD? Thanks much.

If you're upgrading, get in a reservation for the HPX170. Same price as the hvx, actually a bit cheaper some places, and it's definitely improved over the HVX. Unless you need to record to tape, the HPX is the way to go.

Cam,

You should order the HVX bootcamp DVDs. I would recommend renting the camera a few days before and doing some test shoots and post tests.

The HVX is so much more than a HD DVX. Get the DVDs they are great.

thanks guys but i wouldnt be able to mess around with the camera until i got there, so what are the main differences? and can i record to tape on the HVX? will my MBP be able to handle editing HD?

Macbook Pro will handle HD. You can edit on the internal HD OK, but most don't advise it.
If you go external, Firewire minimum and Firewire 800 best.

If you are just going to shoot to tape anyway, dont bother with the HVX. The DVX will do a great job and the viewfinder is better IMHO. If shooting to P2, and especially if shooting for something beyond web distribution, by all means go with the HVX.

The controls are similar for both cameras, except for the DVX joystick.

thanks fred,

thats exactly what i needed to hear. i guess i will shoot to P2 and just capture on site at the end of the shoot because i won't have access to the camera to capture from P2 after that. and as of right now I am working with a usb2 external hard drive but i can pick up a firewire for it.

cheers, cam

if you're going to be using a macbook pro you have two options for offloading the p2 cards. either using the camera and connecting via the firewire or using a duel systems adapter, which allows you to plug the p2 card into the mbp's express card slot. it will be about two times quicker than using the camera/firewire method. but they can be kinda buggy depending on what OS you are using.

and make sure you read barry's post, "proper p2 offloading using a mac"

you can also offload p2 footage using powerbook. i have no problems using mine. offloaded to external HD connected to PB G4. :) I even do all my edits on my PB G4 with no struggles using FCP 6.0
