Step-up ring and the lens hood

I have a 77 mm polarizer filter that I would like to use with the HMC150. However, I would need to use a step-up ring to attach it to the 72 mm lens. Has anyone done this? If so, are the ring and filter visible in wide angle shots, and are you still able to attach the lens hood when the ring and filter are attached?

Why would you want to add steps and possible problems. a good polorizer isn't that expensive and you could flip the 77mm and recoup some cash. I love the B and W filters I bought.

I didn't ask if I should sell my 77 mm for a new 72 mm polarizer. I want to keep the 77 mm for my still camera and I am unable to afford a new $142 B+W Multi-Coated Polarizer at this time.

You didn't ask for that, but it's a solution and you do get what you pay for.. but, Well pick up a Hoya or something.. Just adding suggestions and going about it with a step-up right seems highly convuluded and might compromise certain things in the mix. maybe flare or such and certainly isn't as clean.. If its a circular polorizer that might also be a bit problematic in rotating with a step-up ring..

Either way, getting a good step up ring is essential as the cheap ones will stick to the lens and be hard as hell to get off. I learned the hard way on that, so there in of itself will be 30 bucks and again, I'd recommend the B and W one.... or just get a 72mm polorizer that will have to do for a while...

FYI, I bought a great Tiffen 72mm circular polarizer at EVS today. (They're in Burbank, CA - but the ship all over) They have 'em on sale for $69.00.

Here's the website:

But I'd give 'em a call to confirm that price. I'm sure they'll honor it. They rule...

I know DSLR's need circular polarizers... is the same true for HMC150? I don't see how you could use a circular with any lense hood since you need to be able to rotate the polarizer, potentially for each new shot angle.

In most outdoor situations, you can "dial in" the amount of polarization, and then snap the lens hood back in place. I haven't had any problems with that method, and I've been shooting a circular polarizer on my DVX's for years. Not to mention, the lens hood on the HMC is way easier to take on/off than the DVX!

Yes.. it's adventageous to use on a video cam and especially when also shooting into a car or glass or something with tons of reflections.. Yes you do have to take the lens hood off cause it's too hard to fiddle with when it's on.
