Step by Step, Pansonic 100AP on AVID...

I am a new Avid Xpress Pro user, and am completely confused about Camera settings on my Panasonic AG-DVX-100AP, and what my Avid needs to upload everything from my tape.

I set it to VCR mode I think? I really don't understand when I ask it to search for a Deck automatically, it doesn't register my camera, or its upload???

Is it a Firewire problem? Do you need a special Firewire? I just got some all purpose firewire from some place called Startech.com. I have no idea why it doesn't just upload automatically?

I checked the manuel on the AP and it doesn't say anything much about editing.

I checked the avid website, it says to set the VTR button on the front of my camera, but I have the AP model, not A, and mine has no VTR button??? It doesn't even mention AP? Does Avid support the AP?

I would really appreciate a STEP by STEP help for me to upload from my camera to my computer... from someone who has done it before on the AP:)

I use the DVX100 and my Avid Xpress Pro doesn't even acknowledge the camera being hooked up by firewire. You can configure the capture tool settings, and "Add a deck", but that didn't work for me. I just use a Panny pvdv103 palmcorder, set the capture tool to: generic, and it works fine. There's more than a few threads on this board that warn against using your DVX as a deck, so I would suggest getting a second camera if you can swing it.

STEP by STEP procedures:

1. Power Computer
2. Connect Firewire to Camera
3. Power Camera
4. Switch to VCR mode on camera
5. Computer should then recognize that you have a camera connected.
6. Start Avid. Open Project. Open capture tool.

Does that work for you? You should always have your decked powered and connected before you start Avid or any NLE that you use.

You need to set the camera up manually in the deck configuration in the settings. Most cameras do not declare themselves automatically like decks. I know the DVX does not for sure.

I have Express Pro, and the dvx 100 is listed in the list of the deck configuration settings. I selected it, and it worked fine.

Thanks for the help...

To those who responded...

I spoke with Avid and they said the Panasonic 100Ap "works fine" with Avid. Again, they're hazey on any differences between the whole 100A, 100P as they list it, and 100Ap.

They told me the VCI firewire doesn't register the 100A, AP, P whatever they say, but only accepts the PCI firewire etc etc.

Now they are saying I may need some HP refurbished, old computer or something for some obscure parts of something, either that or $2000 for Mojo??? I couldn't tell as my cell was dying waiting for the hours it took to speak to the right person.

I hope they're just selling me, and not screwing me.

I hope the one of you who said Panasonic doesn't register on Avid was somehow mistaken? No offense, but I really hope you're wrong about this, even though you may not be:(

This whole process may turn out fine with the new Firewire, but I really think this is TOO MUCH. I mean I got the student version? Certainly they would have some easy way of implementing their systems with reasonable upgrades short of $3000 plus dollars worth of extras????!!!!!

This is becoming a fiasco, that I can only pray will somehow turnout:)

Don't worry about "A" or "P" and such. Just irrelevant model numbers. First make sure the computer sees the Camera.

With Camera hooked up and on VCR mode:

Start > Control panel > System > Hardware > Device Manager > Imaging Devices - - - Should show your cam. If no it has nothing to do with Avid

If it sees it start Avid:

In Settings bin:

DBL click "deck Configuration" > Add deck > Panasonic > AG-DVX100p.

You should be good to go - "Auto config" may be needed at that point. You can also try "generic device and "dvbasic device"

Hope this helps....

I'm having a problem myself, I just got avid and under toolset > capture .. its gray, no selection available, I tried both Tools and Toolset and I cannot select capture, it is gray and everything else is black. I did what u said dakota but still no capture. I have my bin open and selected too. This is my very first time using avid alone, I think I am missing something very simple. When I used avid last with a friend he created what looked like an emtpy timeline before we captured, would this have something to do with it?
I'm using express pro

Something else to consider: Windows XP may need a registry change in order for Avid to read your cam through firewire. Try Avid's forum. There are a number of posts on this issue. I for one could not get Avid to recognize my deck/camera...and in the end it just required a simple change to the registry. There are some very clearn steps outlining this procedure on Avid's Forum. It worked for me, and I was using a 2 year old laptop.

That might have something to do with the type of project you selected. If you choose film 24, the capture won't work. Try creating a new project and choose 23.97 as your project type, if you want to create a 24p output. This drove me crazy for a long time. Avid is bear when it comes to capturing, not like Adobe Premiere, which sucks in your tape without a headache.

You have to be in a 23.976 NTSC project to capture since the camera is a 23.976 format and NOT 24p. The capture tool is turned off during a FireWire capture since there is no support for 23.976 into 24 and can only be done so over analog. In which case is a Mojo is needed.

For digital capture of picture and sound over FireWire the formats, frames rates, and audio sample rates ,must match therefore 23.976. A Mojo is not needed for these types of captures.

As far as setting it up, it has already been mentioned; many cameras do not declare themselves to the editing system so the deck/camera templates must be set manually. Do not let the system automatically set this up. Select FireWire direct connection and manually add the camera. Panasonic, DVx100. There is no difference in camera control between the models - nothing changed in that part of the camera. Then go to Capture Tool and make sure your video/audio input is selected for 1394 at the top of the window.
