steddiepod

Sorry, not even close.

It is absoloutly no more a Steadicam than a monopod with a weight on the bottom that you hold at the ballance point in the middle. (That's what it is.)

I actually like the look of this Stedipod. I have the Flowpod, which is almost as expensive but not as versital, though the Stedipod looks like it will get heavy pretty quick.

it might be nice if it can attach to the varizoom vest to become a low end steadicam.

All right, thanks guys. You just saved me some $. Thing is, I want a stabilizer but have come to realize that the only time they seem be worth the hassle is if you have a vest of some sort. And, I have yet to see a stabilizer with a vest or a weight-relief contraption to prevent fatigue for less than $1500.00 bucks.

Have you looked into the gimble handheld stabilizers? Steadicam Merlin for example; absoloutly fantastic, or the JR used off e-bay for $300

That's beacuse a stabilizer is an incredibly complex peice of technology. And that doesn't come cheap.

"I can't find a HD camera for under $1000 why not??"

I will definitely look into the gimble handheld stabilizers. I was tempted to get the Merlin but urged myself against it because it did not seem capable of handling the DVX. Especially with added equipment.

Yes, I agree that a stabilizer is a great piece of gear. But, I think it has more to do with the frustrating state of supply and demand. They are getting what they charge, therefore they are charging for it. Technically, to me, a 1 chip mini-DV camera is an AMAZING piece of technology, truly. But, thankfully you can get them for 200 bucks!

But, I hear what you are saying. If I want a fatigue-free stabilizer, I have to pay pay pay.

You look at this product and see it as superior to a Flowpod...?

I use a flowpod w/arm & vest setup, and I can't see this device as any kind of competitor - no gimbal, larger footprint, and very expensive for what you appear to get (even if the girl in the demo pix is cute, unless she comes with the thing I;m not interested...)

The flowpod is a cheap-and-cheerful solution to the problem best solved by a true steadicam (or similar) system...but this looks even cheaper and not particularly cheerful, by comparison, to me...

The Merlin is a prety sweet rig. I have tried it with a DVX, and it actually flies beautifully with it!

The DVX weighs 4.2lbs, and the Merlin will carry 5lbs without trouble.
So it would depend on what accesories you want to carry, a clipon matbox with a filter should be ok. But once you start putting on rods, keylights, etc.. then it would be over the limit and into the teretory of bigger rigs.

That is EXCELLENT to know. I have been eyeing that Merlin for some time and the learning curve looks beautiful. I still worry about fatigue. Are you aware of any vest units for the Merlin? I have heard nothing but excellent things about it.

I'd recommend the SteadyTracker.
If you have arms like Popeye!
DVX is way too heavy for that.
If you get one of those Glidecams or Steaditrackers make sure your get a body pod too.
You're back will thank you.
And your arm won't fall off!
