Steadicam & Redrock M2

I'm planning to purchase a Steadicam to go with my HVX. In addition, next month I'm plain on get the Redrock M2. My question is when you start to factor in the weight of the camera 5.5lbs and the weight of the M2, Support Robs and 35mm Len. The camera starts to get a little heavy. I thinking the Glidecam Smooth Shooter w/ the Glidecam 4000 may not support camera and the M2. I'm think about getting the Varizoom GT Stabilizer. Has anyone use this product or one similar or would you recommend a different unit. I'm trying stay under or at $3000.

Thanks

With support rails, M2 and Lens, mattebox, and who knows what else, you'll be over 10, so yes the 4000 is not for you. I would say go with glidecam v-16, but it is $3,900 which means you better go sell your plasma 2 times a week. On the bright side, if you do this, youll have the money by the time that M2 arrives!!!!
-sorry this is more humor then help. Best of luck

I personally don't like the Varizoom stabilizers very much. They prety much totally missed the mark when they built their arms. Their arms have very few bearings in thh horizontal direction and therfor are very tight! (As in I had to pull on them the move them horizontally - FAR from beeing isolated from the camera). Plus the way the arm is designed and attaches to the vest you ahve a seriously decreased range of movement.

I think you'll be hard pressed to find anything paticuarly good for 10lb of under $3k though. Your set up is definatly in Flyer teretory, but that's twice your budget.

Another option is to hire an operator.

Hey propaganda,

I started a thread about my experiences with the M2 and the Flyer and you can read about it here:

Although the Flyer may be out of your budget range, there are other important things to think about like how to control the very selective focus of the M2 while you're flying on a rig, and some of the information in the topic may be of use to you.

Like many of the users here, I'm happy to answer any specific questions you have if you need any additional help! Feel free to send a PM.

Good luck!

Haakon,
Thanks for the advice would you at least recommend the Glidecam V-16. I would love to get something that would allow me to get my foot in the door. Then I could upgrade to a better rig later down the road.
