Steadicam Merlin question

I don't have the DVX100 but the little brother DVC30 and the OIS is at best poor for handheld work. For a newbie question about the Steadicam Merlin, is the the cam OIS disabled with the Merlin? Is it a worth while purchase if you 90% handheld work or should I be looking at something else?

Thanks...Angelo

Merlin is very good, certainly better than Glidecam 2000/4000. I have tried all of them and Merlin easily tops the others because it's easy to set up and balance, light and compact. And also because the gimbal is right underneath the center of the camera, it takes less energy to hold it. They also have the manual specifically set for DVX so it's easy to start. Oh and OIS is abled with the Merlin. Free your camera!

I have heard that the merlin is probably the best handheld but it takes alot of getting used to and practice to get things to look good.
Check out the DV-Multi-Rig you can find a article about it on this site, I have heard many good thigns about it and it seems like a really good deal for the type of product it can create.

Yes, DIS-able OIS.
Its appropriate for stationary hand held shooting but not for tripod mounting or moving. It has limited range but it cant discriminate between hand-held jitter and fluid motion such as panning or walking, thus you will get jumps in your footage.
BTW--the Merlin is an excellent tool. Take your time with it. Read the manual. Watch the dvd. Read the info online. Understand the concept of center of gravity and dynamic balance between whats above the gimbal and whats below it. Take the time to do these things and your adjustments will make sense rather than get you frustrated. Above all, practice with it. You wil be surprised at what comes out of your camera. Its a great tool.
