Statue Park Grabs

Just got back from Sala Kaew Ku (Statue Park). The statues are HUGE, most are 8-10 stories tall, and VERY surreal. They look like 1970's hardrock album covers.

These were all shot on F5 (24p) with 5:00pm lightning. The skies were hazy, very little blue. :(

* Notice the blue halo on the top left. Any suggestions?

I am a DVX newbie so suggestions on how to improve my lightning, colors, etc. would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Re: Statue Park Grabs

That one with the cobras is sweet -- looks like a setting for a GI Joe movie. Do you have any more of that with more light on the statue?

Re: Statue Park Grabs

Lovely grabs - what a beautiful place...

Also, I don't know what you were complaining about; the sky on most of those grabs was magnificent!

:D

Re: Statue Park Grabs

..yeah these are some nice grabs . just keep the sun behind you. to avoid that sky blowout. at an angle behind you is usually best. .. nice stuff!

Re: Statue Park Grabs

The sky is washed out. On half the shots it's all white. Is there a setting on the DVX which boosts the blues, making skies darker or richer?

This shot was taken with a digtal camera on a different day, when the skies were more blue.

Re: Statue Park Grabs

nice photo! ..what i mean is that i can see that it was somewhat near magic hour when you were there with the DVX.. although the sky was washy.. the 2nd shot down of the head shows a nicely exposed image with a "blue-enough" sky, so that tells me that it was possible to do in those conditions. alot of the wider shots are a bit overexposed, which caused the sky to blow out a little , and the stautues to take on that "overly orange" appearance. on the others where i can clearly see that you were on the shadow side of the statue i would expect the sky to be more blown out. a polarizer would work wonders for you in these coditions when the sun is at angle to your back.. youd be able to get more rich and crisp blue skies, while maintaining proper subject exposure.

Re: Statue Park Grabs

I wish I had cool-looking stuff like that where I live. Imagine the possibilities.

Re: Statue Park Grabs

I know a guy in Tijuana that can get you one of those statues for the right price. :P

The grabs look nice...like someone already said a polarizer filter would have rocked for these shots.

I'm curious about the blue halo also...anyone know what does that?

Re: Statue Park Grabs

Those are nice--what a great location. Do you think you get permisision to film with a cast and crew? Or go guerilla? It'd be worth writing something just to use the location.

Re: Statue Park Grabs

The Blue halo is color fringing. It's a lens distortion, when you have a very nitid frontier between two regions of very different luminosities. Some light will refract on the glass and "jump" to the other side...

Re: Statue Park Grabs

Thanks for the info taubkin.  :)

Bluespider, the statues actually aren't that old. Maybe 30 years or more.  They were built by a man who had a cult following. He and his followers built hundreds of Buddhist and Hindu statues, here in Thailand and across the river in Laos.  It's a really strange and beautiful place. Actually, they still have his body (under glass) inside the building (see grab). They kept all his possessions (clothes, bathtub, etc.) because he said he would come back to life.  Man, ...giant statues, keep all my stuff, ...this guy really wanted to be remembered. Geez!
