Static Electricity in Pelican Case: A Problem?

I just got a Pelican 1550 for my HVX and have encountered what could possibly be a problem. It has pick and pluck foam and whenever I pull the camera out of the case I get shocked by the static electricity the foam causes.

So my question is... Do I need to worry about the static electricity? Does anyone else have this problem? Can the camera be hurt by it at all? What can I do about it, or do I just deal with the small annoyance?

Cheers,
Ryan

That's weird. I have a Pelican and a Storm for my camera and monitor and I have never been shocked by either.

Static buildup is never good and can definitely cause damage to electronics. I've got a Pelican with pluck foam and have never experienced static shock, and like puredrifting I live in the L.A. area. My guess is that the relatively high humidity here helps prevent the problem.

I'm not sure how to fix this besides grounding the case and yourself prior to touching the camera. It might be possible to drill a small hole into the bottom of the case and run a short piece of copper wire from the inside to the ground that the case is sitting on, but this would compromise the weather sealing of the Pelican, and the foam may not conduct well enough to allow the static buildup to dissipate this way.

yeah, there must be something else going on. ive had like 4 pic n pluck pelicans and have never once been shocked... in any climate.

can you take a pic of your case and contents arrangement and post it?

We use the Pelicans as well and haven't had this happen.
Maybe try a static sheet for a dryer?
Heck, I got nothing else for you???

Maybe try a static sheet for a dryer?
I definitely wouldn't do that, there are animal proteins, fragrances and all sorts of other stuff in those sheets that you don't want to evaporate out and get on the lens. The sheets would probably leave residue on both the outside and inside of the lens.

How about discharging the static just before touching the monitor, maybe touch something else metal before getting near your monitor.

Im one of those people who builds static sooooooo easily that I'm constantly shocking myself throughout the day. I've just learned to be extra careful around anything I dont want destroyed.

Good luck,
Mike

i live in dry west texas and do not have the static problem with the pick and pluck foam, but I do have a problem with it falling apart in 3 months. I got the padded dividers and lid organizer and it works very well.

Thanks everyone for your input.

I got shocked the first 20 times I used the case, and probably a day after I made this thread, the problem magically disappeared. Blame it on the power of suggestion ehh?

you are telling me. I am just glad that it stopped.

I guess I will just hold out and wait to do anything unless it starts up again.
