State of ML RAW Now

Hello,

I have been waiting on installing ML RAW due to the bootflag issue. I have been reading over at the ML forums and it seems they have builds that work with the updated Canon Firmware. Does this have any bearing on the bootflag situation?

I know it is trivial for video folks, but I also shoot stills and do not want to permanently alter my camera. Thanks for your input!

I shoot stills too- ML doesn't hurt anything (~1s startup delay doesn't have any major issue). If you are shooting video, RAW is worth it!

Yeah, if i have a mkIII I'd not be worried by it.
Just for your reference here is a test by a user in ML forums.

measuring from shutter press or turn-on to when the AF points appear in the viewfinder.
• 0.1s: load time without boot flag enabled (from what I've read, can't test since ML is installed already)
• 1.25s: load time with boot flag enabled, no SD card, or SD card with no ML
• 1.7s: load time with boot flag enabled and ML-equipped SD card present

It all depends on what you shoot really.

Consider that a RED scarlet takes around 12 seconds to boot up for a tongue in cheek reference. ;)

2 things really.

1. With bootflag enabled on the mkIII, there is delay in wake up due to ML.
see the test above.

2. Currently, once ML has enabled bootlag in mkIII there is still no way to remove it unlike the other models.

Thanks everybody. Is it true ML now works with the most recent Canon Firmware - 1.23? I try to discover stuff at the ML forums but gosh, it is tough to decipher what is really going on...

BTW, it is not so much about what I shoot but what the person I might want to sell the MKIII to shoots! Although your numbers are encouraging Ted.

I wrestled with the bootflag issue for a long time before moving forward with ML on my 5d3. My solution was to just disable sleep mode on heavy stills shooting assignments. Generic batteries are cheap, three or four will easily get you through a day of shooting and 1500 frames. I flip the cam off when I'm not shooting, otherwise it's always on and no delay at all.

I have been keeping my eye on the GH4 and its developments but when I watch this video http://vimeo.com/77580463 it makes me want to move to RAW video on my MKIII. I don't think the GH series can look this good. Detail yes, look, color & feel, no. I will wrestle some more with the bootflag decision. Good points Chris. It is more about resale for me as I know this would make a photo-only shooter run away from buying, but at some point it is a cost benefit analysis.

What is this bootflag issue..........? On the 5D3 its a none issue... I go back and forth between 1.13 and 1.23 without problems. ML is is the SD card slot and therefore gone when I take the card out.

When you install ML to your 5D3... it alters the bootflag of your camera, which basically means that your camera will take a second longer than it did to boot before the install. Taking the SD card out or changing the firmware is not a solution. Once you install ML the bootflag is changed forever and is irreversable.

There is absolutely nothing to be concerned about. It does not damage your camera.

exactly... 1 second, it's not like it's going to matter in any situation. And if you really really need that one second, then don't do it :)

I pre-ordered a GH4, but I can pretty much guarantee that you'll get a better overall image quality from 5D3-raw.

I've been extremely disappointed with all of the GH4 footage so far, but I need a quick fix to add high FPS to my Blackmagic lineup. 96 fps was an enticing sales point that was too good to pass up.

Thanks. I pretty much have decided to put energy into the 5DMKIII + RAW instead of building a GH4 kit. Since I own a MKIII and the lenses, batteries etc... all I need is a 128GB Sandisk 160MBps CF card for ~25 min of shooting and a USB 3 card reader. Maybe an extra hard drive for all of the large files that will be flying around. Seems like a better deal than the $3,000 - $5,000 I would spend on the GH4 setup. I will miss the 1080p60 on the GH4 though. But there is always a compromise. I am tired of the 5D mush, so it was either only shoot RAW or go with a better option.

60fps on the 5D still looks pretty damn good though...this was made in the early days of ML-Raw (before I was hitting the maximum possible res in 60p);

Look into a USB 3.0 / eSata bay for 3.5" HDDs. I've experienced much better performance per dollar with that setup vs. external drives.

The footage looks really good. Was that crop in the camera or did you do it during editing?

I have my stuff lined up for Raw but haven't taken the jump yet. The only thing that is slowing me down is all the issues of getting the footage useable. With just the 5d mk3 I can download the footage onto my desktop click and play the footage. From there I can open up Vegas Pro and drag the footage onto my timeline edit and I'm done.

But from what I understand with Raw I got to get more softwares (AE) etc..... run it through this software and that software etc, etc, etc...... before I can actually start looking at the footage.

I was playing with some DNG files today using After Effects as well as Resolve 10.1 Lite (free version) and you can look at the footage straight away. But these programs are the first step where you can color correct or grade before exporting the series of still images into a video file for your editor to better work with. So one extra step between the camera and your editor but that step is where you get way more control over the image compared to the H.264 encoded files. Plus the images have a lot more true detail.

I view the extra step as a bonus, because I can match color balance between my shots and make exposure tweaks pretty non-destructively. Then I run out ProRes HQ or 4444 (dumping the MLVs and DNGs to save space) and edit and grade as normal.

The only setback at the moment for me (and it's a pretty annoying one) is syncing audio in Resolve. You can create a new editing timeline within the program and manually layer each DNG sequence with its corresponding WAV file, but unless you export the entire timeline as a single clip in the Deliver window, you won't have any sound. Telling Resolve to sync using timecode does not work either.

MLV2CDNG (http://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=5618.msg39204#msg39204) supposedly exports CDNG sequences that automatically sync with WAV files in Premiere, but I am on a Mac so I have not been able to try it.
