The SLR Magic 12mm F1.6 is hardly an "effect lens". Granted, there is some slight lens distortion, but that can be corrected in post.

And just to make you feel better, one of the participants at the last Zacuto shootout (which will be available in a few weeks) placed a hacked GH2 in 3rd place after the Alexa and Sony F65, and above RED and other Sony and Canon offerings. Apparently someone chose it as first.

It is not necessary to hack the GH2 to get very good images. The hack enthusiasts overstate the benefits.

No...I don't think so. The hack makes a heck of difference in more ways than one.
Sure..shoot something with the stock camera that has no motion in it...and you'd be hard pressed to tell a difference. Once people and objects start moving then you'd clearly see a difference. Also, try color grading the stock vs hack(s)....no contest. Then there is shadow detail etc., etc. I can go on and on...
There is however a point of diminishing returns. That's what you are probably referring to. At this point there are only subtle changes that are probably not worth continuing for some folks. What I mean is the current hacks are "good enough" for what they need to do. But ANY hack is miles better than stock (even the original 40Mbps hack).
Nigel, what GH2 "patches" have you been working with?

While I will say that the hack can add to the GH2, I will also say that I have seen some utter garbage shot with hacked GH2's.
Of course as soon as the OP purchases his new GH2, Panasonic will announce the new GH3. Isn't that how it works... Ha!

I haven't used any since the V1.1 firmware came out last December as that gave HBR 24Mbps 25p which looks fine to me. I think that the last patch I tried was of Ralph B's Sanity.
