Starting A New Business

I checked for a long time to find a thread that was a lot like this one so that I wouldn't be making new threads for no reason, but I didn't find any. However, I am a noob here, so if I missed it, I'm sorry.

Here's the deal: I have 2 grand. (there's my problem right there, huh?:crybaby: )

I want to buy the best camera I can for the price, and although I've had my heart set on a DVX100b, it doesn't look like 2 grand is going to cut it unless I feel like taking some Crooklyn, NY guys to court.

Seeing that I probably won't find a DVX100b for $2000, would anyone suggest a different model that is almost as good as the DVX but in my price range?

Like I said, if this is a repeat thread, just merge it with the original, or link the original to this one and we'll take the discussion there.

what kind of business is it going to be? (And yes I know it's going to be a video business)

Have you considered a used DVX?

Mainly weddings, and mitzvahs. I've actually been looking at some 100's on ebay, but I couldn't find any used "b" models anywhere in my price range. Know anywhere I could find such a rarity?

Forget the B, go for the 100 or 100A if you can, make yourself some money with it, then add that to the resale of the 100 or 100A and and get the 100B or jump to an even better camera. Or even use your 2000 to rent a B until you have made enough to buy one, assuming you have weddings etc lined up.

To be honest 100 or 100A is way enough camera to film weddings and the like, the differences aren't huge.

Great! That's honestly what I was hoping to hear. I mean, the important things to me are 24p, capability to record to solid state, e.g. via firestore, and overall decent quality. I mean, some day I plan to have an HVX200, or better, depending on how AVCHD goes, but for now, I was really hoping that the 100 wasn't too different than the 100b.

Thanks a lot guys!

To be quite blunt, most people outside of the video and film fields wouldn't know 24p from a hole in the ground, nor do they care. That said, why kill yourself to buy a 24p cam? Most clients want a clean image, and as cheap as they can get it. A GL1 or GL2 would serve you as well, and save you almost $1000 off the top, to be used for minor stuff like mics, tripod, printers, software, and other stuff you do need.

And sometimes, it is more constructive to partner with somebody that already has a cam.

That's an interesting point of view, Captain. Would you say a GL1/GL2 or an XL1 would be better assuming I can get a used XL1 for around the same price as the GL models?

By the way, I have Premier Pro 2.0, plenty of mics, a good tripod, and a very good konica minolta printer. The only other business expense that I would have from the beginning would be web hosting. But, I definately agree, a grand to have for anything I might need is a great advantage over being completely broke.

By the way, if it sounds like I'm dismissing any advice ever, that's not the case. I'm only discussing my options and I greatly appreciate anyone's advice. I'm honored that one would give their own time for my gain, so thanks.

What about business licences? I spent a couple extra hundred jumping through all the hoops.

As far as the cam itself, it is unlikely that you will be able to find an XL1 for the same price. IF it is possible, keep these things in mind- 1, it is much larger, awkward, and more conspicuous. It will get you a better image though. 2, it will cost you more for things like filters, a better set of legs that don't twist, and a head that will pans smoothly, and hold the heavier cam without slowly drooping.

Have you thought about doing digital still photograpy first, less to get into, similar income opportunities? Just a thought to get you where you want to be, I just recommended this to a young man- doing sports, events and freelance work. That's how I got started. Chuck

I've already been in digital photography for a while, and I've been recording sports through two handycams for a while. I finally decided that I needed more than a couple handycams.

I am someone who seeks to leverage his income in any business I get into, and although I will mainly do weddings, I will also continue to do sporting events among many other things. I've always loved still photography and videography and it is something that I would love to do for the rest of my life.

Thanks a lot for the ideas, Chuck. It's great to have so many people meet you for the first time and be so friendly.
