Starship 99 Cents Only

I have a fondness for low budget sci fi from the early 80's, so to kill some time on a Sat afternoon- I wanted to try a recreate a look from one of my favorites: Battle Beyond the Stars (with its garish colors :). A Roger Corman Star Wars ripoff from 1980. Star Wars is the better movie in most ways, but BBTS is still more fun to watch for me. Just a couple quick screengrabs from a green screen test I'm doing. Never lighted a model before, and proper green screen takes skill (a given, but it really sinks in when you are trying it yourself). The waveform is a must- the green background looked good to my eyes and to the LCD, but the WF said otherwise. I repositioned the lights accordingly. I'll update this post with a video later- as I got freshen up with Keylight.

And yes I know modified worklamps suck- but I wanted to keep that whole low budget vibe going

Just a thought, but if you are moving the camera in front of the green screen, you may want to add some tracking markers on the background to help your software calculate the paralax.

Yes I did make the dolly rig: skate wheels, aluminum tubing- the usual DIY stuff. I added a variable speed motor to control the movement of the dolly up and down the track.

Ahhh, sweet memories - reminds me of my first super8 spaceship film when I was 12 - seems like a million years ago.

You may consider lighting it different, more from the back - looks way more dramatic.

Let our imaginations smooth out the flashlight/supersoaker resemblance. :)

Well, good frontal shadows will help out with that a lot...

A friend of mine has a similar passion. He met the guy who made "Hardware Wars" and was so inspired he eventually negotiated the distribution rights to it. That in turn started his business as a distribution company: http://www.thecrippledmasters.com/hwhomepage.html
Hardware Wars is still his most famous and popular title.
