Star Wars: The Force Awakens

I can't believe they killed off Han Solo right after the halfway point in the film.

And what's with Chewbacca trying to speak English? That was lame.

Also, the whole "everyone is really a spy for the Empire" thing got tiresome fast.
seriously

Plus the re-incarnation of Obi Wan felt like a cheap lazy scripting crutch.

Sorry about the spoilers, but I just had to vent.

I seriously HOPE that your kidding with your post. If not, you should have put "SPOILER" in your post. And if not, you win major TW AT award for the internet today.

Guys, why would you be anywhere near this thread if you haven't seen the movie? Seriously.

Anyways I'm not sure why some people including some reviewers are saying this is just a setup, doesn't matter about there not being a lot of story, come on, every movie should be accountable on its own.

It's common courtesy to mark something as a 'spoiler' - if you see that word, you scroll past without reading.

I didn't seek out this Star Wars thread, but was going through the 'today's posts' page and happened upon it with the most recent post being a spoiler. The poster said "sorry for the spoilers" at the end of the post.

Yeah anything important I go full media ban, not worth chancing it.. Idiot me had the big UFC fight ruined the other day when I put on the car radio for 15min though!

Haha! Dusty! I made all that stuff up. I have not seen the movie yet, so I just rattled off four of the most absurd things I could think of.

That's just the kind of thing I do, you have to understand, my mother heckled me as a child.

Ahhhh. You got me good. Lines are three times around local theaters here. I imagined standing in a line 1 times around the there just to hear Chewie go Jar-Jar on me. LOL.

I dare you to go pull that off in a bar.

I loved it! The little touches going back to pull on older Star Wars imagery while staying fresh and not feeling like a retread were great. This was so much better than Star Trek but the problem with trek has been the horrible scripts however the third installment looks like they will finally get out there on a mission loke the Star Trek of old.

spoiler alert

the only niggle I had with Star Wars is the plot which was really thin. The character development is great so if you look at it as more of a character driven piece you don't care to much especially since it moves so fast but...

who yo the hell made a map of where Luke is? Why didn't the mapmaker just say where Luke was? If Luke didn't want to be found why did he leave a map in r2d2 and why is the map broken in to pieces? And why does r2d2 wait to the end of the movie to go oh by the way I had the rest of the map the whole time! It makes absolutely no sense but the good thing the movie is so much fun you really don't care about the absurdity of the map quest. Instead you get wrapped up in the Han Solo and son relationship and the fight to take out the megadeathstar and following Rey and fins hero journey. So just a mi or point but the whole map thing could have been a bit tighter

You were actually more right than wrong!

I hated it, and the more I reflect the more I hate it. It's not a Star Wars movie. I know I have to accept that it exists now but I wish it didn't....

how is it 'not a star wars movie' ?

It's a great modern day retelling of the original... with some great deviations and sprinkles of where it might be heading.

Saw this today. I'm by no means a Star Wars 'fan' and neither are my kids, but we went with an open mind. The kids liked it. Like many, I thought it was solid, if unspectacular. Harrison Ford stole it for me, though the Daisey Ridley was very good in a Sigourney Weaver meets Kiera Knightly kind of way. Good fun if not taken too seriously, which is probably why the uber Star Wars fans have issues about it.

A lot of male nerds will be disapointed they can not roleplay Rey.

Insert witty comment here...

* SPOILER ALERT *

I had some issues with this too. A subsequent viewing and a bit of research on the film's backstory yielded this:

It's not literally a "map to Luke Skywalker," but a map of the secret Jedi temples. Luke was believed to have left in search of the First Jedi Temple, so the map to the temples would hopefully lead to Luke.

You need two things to have the whole map: The Empire's old archives (referenced by Kylo Ren when he is interrogating Rey), plus the secret piece of the map that Max von Sydow had at the beginning of the film. R2-D2 had actually downloaded the Empire's archives when he plugged into the Death Star terminal in the original Star Wars movie (Episode IV). So R2's databank contained (among many other things) the rest of the map. But poor little R2 was - to put it in human terms - "heartbroken" after Luke left, and had powered down.

When BB-8 arrived at the resistance HQ and "spoke" to R2, presumably communicating that he now had the missing piece from Max von Sydow, it gave R2 hope again and he (eventually) powered back up, searched his own databank for the map, and gave it to the resistance.

JJ Abrams stated in a recent Q&A that he didn't want to include all of these details in the movie, as he didn't want to bog the story down with backstory.

I think some of the issues people have with the film stems from the fact that it is not a complete story. It has the shape of something that feels like it should be complete, but I think they are truly meaning this to be act 1 in a 3 act story. A New Hope was mostly a self enclosed story as George didn't know if he'd ever get the chance to do more. Empire and Jedi are incomplete on their own, ACTS 2 and 3 of a story. When they started this it was a foregone conclusion they'd do at least three movies, so they decided to truly tell a story in three parts. As a result, this movie is all set up and introduction with multiple questions left unanswered and some characters not fully fleshed out.

Anyway, the 20th Century Fox fanfare was sorely missed. It really is an integral part of the Star Wars opening. Its absence was quite conspicuous.

Just saw it. It was entertaining enough, but I wasn't captivated by it like I was by the original trilogy. I thought it felt like a fan fiction film with a huge budget.

***POSSIBLE SPOILERS***
  • I liked the two leads, though Finn doesn't strike me as a character who's had any military training whatsoever.
  • It was great to see the Millennium Falcon back in action.
  • Not everything has to fly so fast, JJ!
  • So, the Rebels defeated the Empire to become the ruling party of the galaxy. But in the time of peace that followed, we're expected to believe that they didn't manage to build up a better military force (or at least a better intelligence network)? It looked like they were still operating out of a warehouse basement, kind like in the first films, and running the same X-wings (but without Y-wings this time) as they did thirty years ago. Meanwhile, a separate entity has been busy hollowing out a planet, building Star Destroyers, and training StormTroopers. I don't buy it.
  • What's up with C3PO's red arm? What am I missing?
  • The Rancor was so much more terrifying than those tentacled CGI monsters.
  • BB8 needed another droid to play off of, or at least to translate. After BB8 serves its purpose (early on in the film), it's just another visual gimmick.
  • The villain makes a big entrance, and then becomes a lot less cool when he takes off the mask and spends the rest of the movie whining and throwing temper tantrums. I actually thought his voice (when wearing the mask) was pretty cool. Darth Vader is a hard act to follow in that department.
  • Oh no, the MAIN villain is CGI. I'm not looking forward to that showdown.
