Star wars Episode 7: A new lens flare

... was special with its uniqueness, it could have easily been set outside of the Star Trek universe. Maybe some other space station set near a wormhole of some sort, where various battles take place and some kind of looming threat has to be faced by the residents. Can't think of any off the top of my head...

I agree. Babylon 5 was the best of the Star Trek series.

On the subject of over-the-top lens flares, we did a sketch for the upcoming season of Key & Peele that was along the lines of a vanity rap video. The director told me to "douche it up" so, I flared the living crap out of it. Blue streak filters, an absurd amount of light sources in the frame spiking the lens, handheld Xenon maglites. It was thoroughly enjoyable to skewer that fad.

What I am seriously worried about is giving the power of Star Wars and Star Trek to one man. This is something that should never happen, and I was under the impression that we had a series of checks and balances just to prevent such a thing from occurring.
You make a wise observation. In the original series and trilogy, there was a clear and massive line of demarcation -- Star Wars was about (a hokey) religion and faith and in belief triumphing over technology and empirical Right vs. Wrong, whereas Star Trek (in its later seasons and in its movies) exorcised any aspect of religion out of it, and instead focused on science science science. Hence why, IMO, you had the two series appealing to two very different audiences.

But, once again, George Lucas already screwed that distinction over, by turning the prequels into Star Trek. At the first mention of "midichlorians" he punted the whole foundation of what made his series what it was.

So, could having one guy in charge of both of them blur the lines any more than George already has? At this point, not really, I think we have to look at all these new productions not as "sequels" per se, but as something new. A spinoff. A different direction. We'll see how it really ends up.

Or maybe I didn't pay enough attention in civics class.

In regards to the first post, I didn't even notice the lens flares this time around. (STII) Maybe cuz they're in everything everywhere now.

Also, to open up a can of worms (because there was some Lucas bashing) I think Revenge of the Sith was pretty damn good. Plenty of action scenes, a GREAT light saber fight.....& I love that scene at the end where they are creating Darth Vader. People always hate on it, saying he looks like Frankenstein, but I think they got it right. I might watch Revenge tonight with my son. If it doesn't hold up, I'll let you know. The Phantom Menace is absolutely awful. Age has not been kind to a movie that sucked from the get-go.

It's not that he "looks like Frankenstein", it's that the whole scene is a direct homage to the scene in the movie of Frankenstein, even down to the shouting of "Nooooooooooooo".

OK, I'll have to check out the original. I just keep seeing these Frankenstein references online.

I just think they captured the rage & frustration of a guy who thinks he accidentally killed his wife & unborn kids in a blind fit of rage, albeit a bit goofy with him plodding around.

Basically he's just a guy with anger management issues....in a galaxy far away.

I was never distracted by lens flares in Into Darkness.

I'm not sure if flares will stand the test of time, but they're contemporarily "in." I won't be bothered if there are a bunch of flares in the new Star Wars.

wow, hadn't imagined this thread blowing up. nice inputs. for those that didn't really notice the flares the first time around, it just might be the case of now that you've been told about it, you'll notice the crap out of it next time around. there are some compilations around the net of all the flares and it's rather comical when you watch them all.

as for the general possibilities for the movie otherwise, have they leaked any plans on a trilogy? i would have to imagine the laws of money have already dictated it must be a trilogy, but then again perhaps they aren't dead set on it until the first one makes 9 digits.

the prequels are 100% awful. they each have some cool scenes, such as the end fights for the second and third, but they don't even come close to making up for the awfulness as a whole. if you haven't heard of redlettermedia. you're welcome:

The original trilogy has some hokey moments, like Ewoks, but on the whole I felt it was geared towards adults. It felt like an adventure, an Indiana Jones movie in space. All the prequels seem to me to be written more for tweens, and teens.

I just hope they have some fun with the new movie and the writing is geared more towards adults than tweens.

Disney has announced that after Ep 7 in 2015, they will release a new SW film annually. The Episode films will be every two years with one-off character films (ex. Boba Fett centered movie) released in between the episode years. An ambitious plan that depends on box office of course, but I think they'll be just fine when it comes to ticket sales.

I watched an interview with Abrams recently, where he not only seemed excited about directing the new star wars, but he also plainly stated (loosely quoted) "I understand that Star Wars isn't Star Trek, and that they are two different worlds with two different approaches. I'm not going to treat Star Wars the way I am Star Trek."

Basically it's him saying,"alright internet people, quit the whining! I'm not going to put in a bunch of lens flares!"

I'm excited for Abrams. I'm a fan of both Star Trek and Star Wars (more wars), and didn't mind what he did with the new movies. Let's be honest, the techno babble hard sci-fi element of Star Trek won't hold up anymore these days. It's not for the new generation. However core fans don't make ticket sales. It's the reality.

Also Abrams understands adventure, humor, action, tension, and he knows how to make things work. I've been rewatching Lost with my gf, which mind you he had very little to do with the final seasons, but right from the first episode there's tension, mystery, great characters, and a subtle approach to something grandiose. He's an expert at this. Pair him with a good writer and he's golden... and it seems they found a good one (I hope).

However no matter what, people are going to hate episode 7. Why? It's not Star Wars A new hope, or empire strikes back, or return of the jedi. Also the core fans are no longer kids anymore. No matter what Abrams does, some people are not going to like it, most likely the core fans. Doesn't matter what characters you have, or how close or far you go from the source material. Most likely, just like with Star Trek, he'll be going for the newer generations, not for the one 50 year-old in his basement with action figurines and star wars underwear.

But who knows. This is all speculation. Let's wait for it to come out before complaining about it.

Bring the two worlds together, into one universe- which will either result in a cataclysmic cancellation of universes (matter meets anti-matter), or a new and improved universe (and film) will result: Star WarsTrek!
Either Kirk + Luke or Kirk vs Luke...

What I am seriously worried about is giving the power of Star Wars and Star Trek to one man. This is something that should never happen, and I was under the impression that we had a series of checks and balances just to prevent such a thing from occurring.

True. So to get around this consolidation of power, have 2 directors, one directing each world (like the excellent WWII film Tora! Tora! Tora! where an American and Japanese director made each side's story). Marry the stories in post...

As for flares, I prefer when lenses flare to when tempers or pants do...

Back to Darren's thought real quick about the last three being awful:

my thoughts until recently were along the lines of "well, the movies are for kids and that's why us adults can't relate to the latest installments." But at home we have the blu ray box set, and unsolicited, my young son only wants to watch the original three. He can hang with the newer ones only briefly because the action scenes are broken up by painful diatribes on trade tariffs and delagations of power in the senate.

that, and try doing a maiming/murder count between the two trilogys.

sure plenty of generic stormtroopers go down for the original, some hands get cut off, and an old guy gets thrown down the literal a proverbial tubes... but let's stack that up to the prequels....

arms cut off
hands cut off
legs cut off
lava burns
betrayal killings
beheadings
bystander women killed
children killed (in two movies and at least two separate races)
flaming hearts (not quite the quality of temple of doom)
enough politics to kill billions of my beloved brain cells
and of course thousands of poor innocent simpleton droids killed

yea, these are TOTALLY kids movies...

what the heck kind of kids are YOU raising ;P

what the heck kind of kids are YOU raising ;P
You have to take into consideration that it's a different time, just turn on the television, the kids shows are riddled with adult themed innuendos, way more violence than in the 1970's, the swearing is out of control. I can't for the life of me understand why there's more tolerance for this type of thing these days, And I don't argue your point about there being more violence in the last three films, I'm just saying that I also agree the new sequels are more kid oriented($$), through the characters, but they tried to be clever with the dialogue, and keep the adults entertained as well. It just didn't work, at least in my opinion.

but they tried to be clever with the dialogue

oh yes, george did try. quite a few times. and it only took till this year for him to hand over the reigns in full :)

and as for your point about the rampant lack of content control for kids. it's only going to get worse. as for my opinion on that matter, i place blame in this order:

Parents
celebrities
clothing designers

Maybe I'm getting lost in the sarcasm, but wait .....star wars movies not for kids? Didn't u see the original trilogy as a youngster? Even though its 2013, a good deal of boys at my kids daycare have Star Wars shirts and know all the characters. (Irresponsible parents)

the cows out of the barn in terms of sex & violence in the media and what kids see. Last thing I'm worried about are the repercussions of count dooku getting his head cut off.

But no sarcasm here, yes blame me.....I am awful, along with clothing designers. (Oh I'm so tempted to bring the boy to see pacific rim. )

This seems brilliant. Along the lines of the Marvel model I assume?
