Star wars box set

Re: Star wars box set

I think "Jedi Rocks" is the new music playing in Jabba's palace. Personally, I didnt have any probs w/any of the changes in 97' or now, but thats just me. The documentary alone inspired me more to make movies now more than anything I bought on DVD in the last 2 or 3 years. You may hate his "changes", but anyone who shakes there fist at the old skool Hollywood/Studio system(*cough* Robert Rodriguez*cough*) will always be cool in my book.

Explosions... yes, but without air there won't be any sound. Ever stood next to the space shuttle going by in outerspace?? See what I mean?

LOL

CaptainMench...I've always thought about how the explosions work, but never about the noise. Slipped my mind...good call...

I like how into it everyone got about the explosions...Anyone going to take on the whole "Force" thing not being realistic... ::)

Re: Star wars box set

I don't mean to insult George Lucas; I think the man is a genius and it's a shame that the media is beating up on him. Lucas is (and always has been) a great director with a truly unique viewpoint (he's very into mythology and anthropology--even American Graffiti was based on anthro). He once said (or quoted someone who said) that "a film is never finished, only abandoned" and this fits his style of film making perfectly...he creates a film as a living entity, which transforms during production and post production into something entirely different from what was envisioned in pre-production. This is very anti-Hitchockian (who said he hated shooting movies because it was busy work which resulted in what he had in his head from the beginning anyhow), and I think it's not a good attitude, but it does explain why Lucas feels he can constantly revise his movies. I don't think this is a bad thing; people clean up old prints all the time, and many of the special effects changes (like the new lightsabers, finally rerotoscoped for DVD) are merely ways to improve the look of the film. Some things, like the new sequence in Jedi (I can understand why he added it, but I feel that it was poorly directed and the song was horrible) don't improve the original, though.

The old movies have bad special effects, but the only thing bad special effects do is prevent suspension of disbelief. Throwing random CGI in with old-school props jumps at us even worse than a few rough matte lines, and totally brings us out of the movie. Consistancy is the real issue with the special editions and it's ironic that improved special effects actually make us MORE aware of the fact that the film isn't real.

Still, these movies are Lucas's babies and it's great to see that he still loves them enough to feel he has to improve upon them. I may disagree with the changes, but Lucas brought us the movies in the first place, and he has every right to mess with what he's created, as much as I wish he wouldn't. What makes me feel worst is that people constantly denounce Lucas's abilities (sure, episode I sucked, but even the best directors have weak moments, especially after long hiatuses). He's now bitter and angry at the media as well as film companies, and it's terrible to see an incredible creative genius who brought so much wonder into the world and revolutionized the film industry brought down like that.

Re: Star wars box set

But maybe his attention to always fixing or adding to his work prevents him from moving forward with new material. He is with out a doubt on the edge of digital technology and incorperating it into the film industry. This however raises the question- is it the image quality of the film or the content and story which is more important. he has the money resources and time to rework his films so I am in no way against it, I think I just expected more out of episode I & II than eye candy.

Re: Star wars box set

I'd like to quote the Simpsons if I may. (I'm gonna have to paraphrase)

Character Strikingly Similar to Lucas: "Now that we've perfected digital eyelash rendering, our movies are better than ever!"
Lisa: "Better technology doesn't mean better movies. Your first films were cinematic masterpieces."
CSSTL: "Your right, I'm gonna go back to my roots, lifting plots and character's from old westerns and samuri movies. To the video store!"

Re: Star wars box set

Watched EMPIRE tonight and was blown away. The only items I am aware of in terms of REDOING are the enhancment of SFX (Explosions, Lasers, Cities and the Snow Monster dude). Wonderful looking, wonderful sound and a treat to watch.

Anyone know of any silly Special Edition stuff on this one?

Re: Star wars box set

The widescreen box set is at #1 on Amazon's Sales Rank list. Fullscreen is trailing at #2. If anyone got fullscreen, than I say shame on you.

Re: Star wars box set

the only other thing that seemed different to me was the scene when vader and the emperor speak. i cant remember the dialog very much from the original, but this version seems to explain way more then i remember, mabe not though. also, i thought the emperor looked different. anyway, found this article on cnn which confirms the change of the emperors apearance....

http://www.cnn.com/2004/SHOWBIZ/Movies/09/20/star.changes/index.html

interesting how he added a scream to when look falls down the tunnel for the 97 verison. then took it out of the dvd...

Re: Star wars box set

...i cant believe how amazing empire looks. i saw it last night, and i watched jedi tonight, jedi looks amazing as well. so awesome. though i still get very sad at the end of jedi. i just want it to continue. :-/

Re: Star wars box set

Anyone listening to the commentary? Ben Burtt sounds like Peter Jennings! It's weird. Listen....

Re: Star wars box set

Man, I actually paused episode IV so I could post this...

After all the clean up and CGI additions the old composite imperfections during the dog-fight after the escape from the Death Star are still there (the green boxes surrounding the Tie-Fighters). I thought for sure they would have fixed and /r replaced that.

I remember watching one of the initial ‘making of’ Star Wars back in the day and one of the special effects guys was all “If you look carefully you can see the green box frames we used, yada, yada” and they have always been extremely obvious.

I think it’s kind of cool actually ;D
