Star Trek

There is a whole world out there that doesn't know about Star Trek, it's mainly a North America thing.

They have been in preproduction for the second one for a while now.

I was assuming they were targeting the new youth generation. I would think by now a good part of the world has heard of Star Trek, well, in the developed nations anyways. Hard to imagine why not.

North American, that's sounds about right. We could even say the US and Canada I suppose. Yeah, you make a point there.

Good to see they are pushing ahead. I'm down for it. I like Trek. What can I say.

mmmm. Not sure about that but still, huh, I'll get back to you. It'd be hard to justify that, but, let me get back on that.

*Edit: Okay, labour costs have gone up. What did they bring in? Can we bring that up to maybe 500 mil? What's a regular ball buster cost these days? 150 mil sounds a bit short in comparison.
Wow, this is getting way out of my league. :)

Hell yeah. If they make them good, I'm down for another 6, no problemo.

Yeah, I dunno. Somebody said getting old is like being stuck on a TV channel that shows nothing but re-runs. I'm starting to feel that way about certain things. If I never saw another Star Trek, or Star Wars, or James Bond, or Harry Potter, or Die Hard, or Indiana Jones, or Spider-Man, or Batman, I would be just fine...But I'm bored and curious enough to watch them if they keep on making them.

^^ Funny, I was going to echo your post #613, but you pretty much wrote down everything I was thinking here.

In my lifetime, I'd like to see one more ORIGINAL movie phenomenon like Star Wars in '77. I want the whole shooting match to follow: The toys, the Burger King glasses, the disco remixes and the holiday specials too! (even if they suck)

That would be a great to see. It seems every damn movie that comes out is a remake, reboot, re-hash, Re-tarded.

I just read they are remaking Cliffhanger. CLIFFHANGER. Far from citizen kane but great fun as-is. why in the hell would that need a re-make?
I can see nightmare on elm street or christine, or maybe even demolition man. But effing cliffhanger?!

Cliffhanger!?...The last big, original movie I was genuinely surprised by was probably The Matrix. Went in not really knowing much about it, being underwhelmed by the trailers, and dubious about the presence of Keanu Reeves, and was pretty much blown away.

Not sure about that. For me it all lies in the script.
I think this one could have been awesome with a better script.

I do like the recreated characters so therein lies the hope. :)

Same here. Even though I had some minor complaints, overall I really liked Abram's directing, lens flares and all, but it was really the script that irked me. I was pretty much with the film up until Spock dumped Kirk on Delta Vega, with no means of protection or any way to communicate with the Starfleet outpost where Scotty and his little sidekick were. I'm sorry, but that really makes this new Spock a total douche in my book. And all this so that Elder Spock can TELL us the plot. That's when the film really started to lose it. Up until then, with the exception of the "Sabotage" scene, I was enjoying the film.

I wouldn't mind them doing The Next Generation crew in a similar origin story film, headed by a different creative team. Maybe a Top Gun type of film about a young Jean-Luc Picard training at Starfleet Academy? Then towards the end there is a threat to the Federation and Picard goes into battle.

Also, I think a redone Voyager could make for a compelling series of Star Trek films. The premise of a Federation starship stranded 70,000 light years from home could really work well on the big screen, and would give a series/trilogy a good narrative goal that would tie the films together, getting home in one piece. Best way to start would be to throw Voyager into the Delta Quadrant and have the crew face off against the Borg.

Since Batutta gave us his dream cast for a TNG film remake, I'm gonna do mine for Voyager.

And get Bryan Singer to direct. I thought he did a pretty good job on Superman Returns, keeping the classic elements while also adding some new stuff and making sure the whole thing was still balanced between those demands.

Then again, I'd love to see what Darren Aronofsky would do with Star Trek.

I hear ya!!!!

It's not so much that I hate remakes and reboots, but when nearly every freakin' film is one, then it really ticks me off.

Same here on The Matrix. I thought it looked stupid from the trailers. I had no idea what I was in for.

The summer of 1999 was a pretty good time at the movies. Phantom Menace sucked but it was still exciting to see a Star Wars film on the big screen. The Mummy was a fun old fashioned adventure film. Of course The Matrix was awesome, as was The Sixth Sense. Two original films that were smart, exciting, entertaining, and successful.

Come on Hollywood. It can be done.

Is Robert Rodregiz directing this one? I'm out of the loop, sorry.

I can't picture a Robert Rodriguez Star Trek. That just doesn't compute, especially if he made it as one of his kid's movies. Yikes.

I'm all for the Machete film that he is supposed to make though.

I just lost all respect for you.

Oh come on, I never said he would be the only one, just as JJ Abrams probably isn't the only person capable of doing a good TOS Star Trek film. I only mentioned him because he's been down the remake/reboot road before and might know better how to tackle a reboot better this time around. It's not like I mentioned Brett Ratner or Uwe Boll as a possible candidate.

I also mentioned Darren Aronofsky as an interesting choice for some new Trek as well. Hell, this is just random tooling around as to what a fun cast might be for a Voyager film series. It is in no way definitive. Even if it ever happened, which is doubtful, it wouldn't have any real effect on Abram's new Trek film, and any sequels with his cast that will inevitably be made.

It was a sarcastic joke :) J.J. is directing this next one.

I thought that maybe the last picture with the snake, which looks a little Grindhouse-ish, and that I mentioned Eva Mendes might have sparked the Rodriguez comparison.

One other thing. If Star Trek ends up being a mega huge franchise again, which it looks like it might be, it would be interesting to have another film trilogy that could come out in between the new JJ Abram's trilogy installments. The reason I think Voyager would be fun is that TOS crew is commanded by an extremely confident thrill-seeking womanizing adventurer in Captain Kirk, while Voyager would be a nice contrast by having a beautiful and graceful woman in the captain's chair.

Well, at least I remember one or two plot points of Nemesis, whereas I can't even remember if I was awake during Undiscovered Country. So I guess it could go either way...

But... meh. You're probably right. :)

Yep, it's going to be a very successful reborn franchise with the numbers it is doing, so far it has out grossed all previous Trek movies, here is an interesting comparison for domestic BO of all the Trek movies and remember the new Trek is only 8 days into it's theatrical run and not all it's overseas markets have opened.

http://boxofficemojo.com/franchises/chart/?id=startrek.htm

It's at $165 million worldwide but the overseas grosses are only 29% usually it's the other way around with a third being domestic.

I know Paramount has cleaned up in the last week selling T.V rights to it, FX channel just paid them $24 million just for the right to air it for a period of time on cable, thats just one network in the US. After it's theater run, dvd sales and tv sales have been made it is expected to make Paramount $20 million a year for the next 20+ years.

With numbers like that there will be many more Star Treks!

Your wishes will come true to see Kirk as an extremely confident thrill-seeking womanizing adventurer afterall he is in his early 20's now.

Hopefully on the next one the script will be better.

I guess I can look at this in a similar fashion to the Star Wars prequels. I pretty much despise Phantom Menace, but then Attack of the Clones was a huge improvement, then an even bigger improvement was made with Revenge of the Sith. Still not as good as the original Luke trilogy, but at least the trilogy got better.

Although, I wouldn't say that Star Trek is anywhere near the bottomless pit that The Phantom Menace lives in. Not even close.

I think you might have to get your hands on some Red Matter, create a singularity, and fly through it pretty far into the future to see something like that again. Maybe by that time we'll actually have a real life holodeck.

Or you could just opt to go back to 1977 and see Star Wars on the big screen. Of course by doing so you'd have created an alternate timeline/parallel universe. At least you might be able to prevent Lucas from making Howard the Duck and The Phantom Menace.

Honestly, if your a Trekkie they will never get better (Trekkies knows this), the flaws will be squared to the 11th power. For the market they are going after it'll be bigger than ever.

Why don't all the "smart" Trekkies who complain like little girls go out and make thier own movie? I'd love to see it!

I don't really consider myself a Trekkie or a Trekker or whatever the proper term is. Also, I've always been more into the darker realm of sci-fi cinema like Terminator, Aliens, Matrix, Blade Runner, Children of Men, and the new Battlestar Galactica. That is part of the reason why the Borg are my all time favorite Star Trek villain, so maybe my expectations of Trek are a bit skewed too much towards those other types of sci-fi.

I wonder if we should put TNG and BSG writer/producer Ron Moore in this category? Since he did Battlestar partly as a sort of reaction to all the things he didn't like about Star Trek and its various incarnations.

As for making my own sci-fi and or space opera films... I'm working on it.

I would rather see Uwe Boll direct Star Trek than Singer. At least it won't be one gay metaphor after another, and Kirk would spend the whole movie stalking an ex and pining over her and his Bastard kid.
