Star Trek

Keeping my review short:

2 things. 1, I actually quite liked it, I grew up on Trek and going in had the bar set pretty high, and it was met.

2, I think they may have been better off naming it "STAT TREK: THE LENS FLARE EXTRAVAGANZA!" Yes, the ridiculous overuse of both real and post-prod. lens flares drove me a bit nuts. Hopefully IF they produce a sequel, they'll ease up on the shaky cam moments and feeling the need to shine direct light and glare into the lens every shot.

No time for a full review, but this film exceeded my expectations and it was a great night out at the movies. I think I need to see it again.

After Effects geeks/aficionados take note that Andrew Kramer did the credit animations and they rock.

There's no doubt the lens flare thing was done to death, but I asked my wife if it bothered her and she said, "what are you talking about?" proving that most of us on this board are a bit too close to the flame.

Really, a great start to this summer's movie season.

And I totally overlooked all the plot issues and suspended my disbelief for 2 hours. I'm another one of those "fun" DVXusers.

Just saw it and really enjoyed it, I thought the cast was just great, and actually thought the lens flare thing was cool, I liked this film having a unique style like that. That beginning sequence was fantastic.

I would consider myself a casual star trek fan, probably always wanted to like more than I actually did and this movie has made me excited for the future of it, whereas 5 years ago I thought it was dead. It appeals to a broader audience which alot of trekkies seem to hate but it had to do that or it was going to go away.

My ebay rating: A- would see again!!!!!

I knew I was going to hate the production design, so I watched it from the perspective of whether or not I would have liked it if it looked the way I wanted.

Verdict: no. This was almost a remake of Nemesis.

Considering how abissmal the franchise was getting, I found it a refreshing change. It didn't feel like nemesis at all. Nemesis made me nauseus. This one was actually fun to watch and I left the theatre in a much better frame of mind.

You know, there's a lot of things I can (and will, no doubt :D ) nitpick about this movie, and maybe my opinion will change as I think about it more, but I left the theater liking this movie a lot.

I'm going to attempt an actual "review" of this movie soon, but one thing I wanted to ask right away--did anybody else get thrown just a little by the vast gulf between the "high-tech" and "low-tech" sets? The Enterprise bridge is 100% contemporary high tech, and Engineering is (to quote someone earlier in this thread) a brewery (or, to quote MST3K, the Land 'o' Lakes dairy :) ). I think the most jarring moment along these lines was early on, when Faran Tahir was making his long trek to the Kelvin's shuttlebay, and at one point was walking up a staircase that seemed to have a concrete-block wall... not exactly what I was expecting to see inside a starship...

saw it. i had fun. but all the highlights seemed to be references to the original films or series. everything that came from jj and company didn't strike me as all that compelling. i most enjoyed karl urban's tribute performance to deforrest kelley.

Haven't seen it yet, but Karl Urban rocks imo. How was Simon Pegg as 'Scotty'?

funny and endearing, but in a different way than james doohan. it's really just simon pegg doing his schtick with a modified accent.

I wanted to see it on opening day, but I'm tired of having to go to wait 2 hours in line to be able to get good seats. Anytime I go 1 hour or less it's always in the neck breaking front rows...

Gonna wait till at least next week...

Very much enjoyed it with my boys.

Fantastic way to get them excited about ST. We watched Wrath of Khan last night and the Khan episode from the original series so they knew all the characters.

I was amazed. THEY were sold!!

I liked it as was said before as a tribute performance film (fencing??? only a GEEK would remember THAT episode!! (I do)). What I'm not sure I like is that (maybe) they opened the way for a full range of film sequels -- I hope not.

But, as the time travel thing might have laid out, if I was paying attention correctly, opened the door for that.

LOVED my 2+ hours in the theater. Great print, great audience (fans)... only way it would have been better for me is if they did something a little different... I'd spoil if I tried to explain. Let's just say... um, put the ship in reverse?

Enjoy the trip. OH -- I DO wish Michael G-whatever had added a few more musical cues to the original soundtrack. Did I miss them?
