Star Trek

Presently working with an old friend from TNG/DS9/Generations - just about the only pre-Trek person they hired; apparently having prior ST experience was a disqualifier - who has been regaling me with the horrors of the script, etc...

...by the way it apparently *is* a story point, that they welded the 1701 together on the freakin' ground and then lifted her to orbit...

...and he had some copies of the new Enterprise design.

I'm sorry to say that it is just about the ugliest damned thing I have yet seen done for the Trek universe. *Much* worse than the pix on this thread...and believe me, I wanted to like it, but it's just disgusting.

Only my own opinion, of course.

If it's uglier than this one, I'm very, very frightened... I suppose somebody would get sued if those were to find their way onto the Internet... ;)

Why would that even be a story point? What possible dramatic value could there be in knowing that? *sigh* And I had such high hopes for this movie...

We all thought Zachary Quinto was a good choice for Spock, but actually seeing him on this poster is like seeing a young Nimoy incarnate. Spooky. Not getting anything from Chris Pine as Kirk, though.

Not quite sure what's up with the civvies on Kirk and Uhura, and I sure as hell don't know why, if Hulk #1 there in the upper left is supposed to be a Rihannsu--ERRRRRRR, Romulan, sorry--he's not sporting anything extra in the ear department...

I'm not entirely sold on that shot of Pine as Kirk, but I can kind of see it as a younger Kirk with a certain attitude. This is certainly going to be the hardest character for Abrams to sell us, and I guess I'm willing to cut him a little slack on it...

Bunch of pictures hit the net. The one below is the first I've seen of the actor playing Kirk, that feels like Kirk. Something about the expression on his face conveys a Shatnerian vibe. I also think Karl Urban as Bones might work better than expected. Cho, however, looks like Harold going to a Star Trek convention. For the Trek-Challenged, the characters from left to right are Chekov, Kirk, Scotty, Bones, Sulu and Uhura.

And the bridge--

And here's another one of Spock in action--

If there's anything in sci-fi set design I HATE, it's plexi with white lines running through it -- worse if they glow a color (usually blue).

This looks like TV.

I think as a culture we've moved far enough away from "The future is cool and clean and slick" feeling that if we don't see a noir / grungy look, it looks cheesy. However even the bridge from the 80's films looked cooler than this.

Looking at it further, it doesn't even look like TV -- it looks like a staqe play being put on AT a Star Trek convention. What's with the see-through uniforms?

I have a whole box of the new Star Trek movie shirts that say Stardate 12-25-2008 (original release date) and was postponed until spring / summer of 2009.

Are these colletors items or should I use them for shop towels?

Do Treky fans like this kinda stuff?

OK, I gotta be honest, I'm not feeling the bridge. At all.

That said, I am totally digging the cast. That group shot really works for some reason. Yeah, on one level I know it's the guy from Hot Fuzz, and the guy from Harold and Kumar, and even somehow "Dammit, Jim, I'm a doctor, not a Rider of Rohan!" there in the middle, but on another level it doesn't even matter. Weird.

Does anybody else find it significant, or at least odd, that at no time are we seeing Young Kirk in anything other than the black undershirt?
