Star Trek

The "Gabe Koerner" Enterprise has been around for a while now; since, IIRC, well before this movie was around. IMO, it looks like the bastard offspring of the TOS and TMP Enterprises and a Cylon from the new BSG, and I will be very disappointed if it or anything like it is in the film.

And I'd have to say the first image is a little too like it for my taste...

The proliferation of "original" Enterprise designs is starting to get weird. Like the joke about the blind guys and the elephant...

Three blind men who have never encountered an elephant are given opportunity to examine one and form their own impressions.

One feels the trunk and concludes that an elephant is long and sinuous, like a snake.

One touches a leg and decides that an elephant is cylindrical and massive, like a tree.

One grasps the tail and believes that an elephant is skinny and tough, like a whip.

There's versions with more than three blind guys, but you get the idea.

I saw the teaser last night.

I never watched TOS but have watched everything else that has been put out there (except for some of the Enterprise disaster) so I don't have this "love" of the TOS enterprise that everyone else seems to have. I do think that the TMP refit Enterprise is the best looking ship in the entire world of Star Trek, however.

Anyway, I have to say it peaked my interest. It looked like a dark and frankly more modern take on the star trek universe. I'm anxious to see how it plays out.

It's true; the B was a thing of beauty, and my personal favorite after the A-refit...

The ship looks better in the trailer than in that still frame (especially on the big screen :) ), and it does seem like it's much less "modernized" than the Koerner version, so it might not be as bad as I thought. Once the trailer's on the web, though, I'm sure I'll be frame-by-framing it to overanalyze everything I can se...

There's a nice touch where one of the "Bussard collectors" (or whatever the hell they are on the TOS Enterprise) is rotating... :D

The NCC-1701-A is the best ship, period. (best bridge too for undiscovered country)

Also the red uniforms were the best. For a short while between movies 2 and movies 6, star trek was a real navy instead of boyscouts in space.

I was raised by trekies and I am ostracised by them because I only enjoy the original 6 movies and everything else is crap in my eyes.

That is what JJ abrams should shoot for, bring back the magic of the original 6. (besides 3, 4 and 5)

Okay...

The 1701-A and 1701-B are beautiful

The 1701-C, 1701-D and 1701-E are marginal

and except from about one-quarter astern, the NX-01 is just ucking fugly.

The NX01 may not be as pretty as the 1701, but it is a prototype. Hence the NX designation. If Enterprise had made it a few more seasons, you would have likely seen the prototype of the 1701.

Prototype is not necessarily synonymous with uglier than a box of warthogs.

I was actually disappointed that they didn't have the guts to go back to cardboard sets and velour uniforms and ankle boots for Enterprise, strictly in the interest of maintaining proper continuity...

re: the trailer...

The Enterprise is assembled using hand welds?! Holy mother of %^@&!.

I dug the commentary - I like how they're still trying to pull their JJ Abrams we-aren't-gonna-reveal-anything and you're just gonna want it that much more marketing crap even though it's STAR TREK. Pretty sure we know the basic premise, a-holes. Phasers, pointy ears, spaceships, dorks - we know your game.

For someone that has never watched the show (except to see that chick with the anti-gravity boobs go into heat), how big is the Enterprise? Like Carnival Cruise lines big? Bigger? Smaller?

Generally accepted length of the TOS Enterprise is 289 meters; 305 meters for the TMP version. At the thickest point, the saucer section has something like twelve decks.

(And no, I didn't have to look that up. :) )
