Standard zoom for the FS100

Hi,

I love my prime set but I now want to invest in a fast standard zoom for the added versatility of it. The metabones adapter is in the mail so I want to go with a canon mount to allow me to install the lens on futures cameras (C300 successors or sibling, futures DSLR, etc).

I would like to get advices about the Canon 17-55 f2.8 and the tamron and sigma equivalent. I can afford any of these lenses, but there is still a 500$ gap between the canon one and the sigma or tamron ones. a 500$ that can be spend on other things.

What I want is a lens that exhibit enough sharpness for video at max aperture at all focal length, and a focus ring that is not so bad to use ( I know that every zoom lenses designed for stills somewhat sucks in this departement, but which one is the best...).

Of course I am talking about the stabilized version of those lenses.

Thank you for your advices.

I had a Canon 1755 and it's an excellent lens quality wise, really amazingly good for the price. However the manual focus was very very short and for me was the reason i sold it all. I've ended up with sony alpha 1635 and 2470 but of which have a great manual focus ring and quality. Of course we're all waiting for the firmware update to use them to 100% of their potential.

cheers
Paul

Thanks Paul,

There is two reason why I don't want to invest in alpha lenses.

First, there is no way to adapt them to canon cameras.
Second, since the alpha shakes have in-body anti shake, there is no stabilized lenses. And I want this lens to be stabilized.

When I first got my Canon 7D I got the Tamron 15-50, it was ok. I then got the Canon 17-55, which I liked much better and returned the Tamron even though it was much less expensive. In my opinion the Canon 17-55 is really an L Lens quality, but they don't make L lenses in a EF-S type. The focus is a bit short, but the Tamron's was impossibly short, like 1/4", ridiculous for manual focusing. The IS on the Canon is much nicer than the Tamron, all the Tamron ISs are kind of jerky, they stay on a subject for a time then jump to the next subject. The Canon IS is much smoother and just evens out the shakes.

I have a FS100 and Metabones/Conurus adapter and have been shooting a lot with the 17-55 with no problems and they image is great. I have also been shooting with the 24-105 4.0 L. That is also working well and has a longer range. The glass is good on that lens as well.

Howeveve, if I didn't have the Canon lenses and was buying new lenses just for the FS100, I would consider E or A mount that would allow for autofocus or push focus, it is very helpful with shallow DOF lenses.

I have the Canon EF-S 17-55 and am considering getting the Metabones adaptor to use on my NEX-7... for those who have used it, does the 17-55 have any vignetting issues on the FS100? Since the NEX-7 and the FS100 have the same size sensors, I'd think it should have similar results.

I would have to caution you about the metabones adapter. Well not the adapter but the company itself. I ordered one back in january and they informed me before i got it that it had firmware issues so i was told to refuse the shipment so it got sent back. I've not heard anything back. I want a full refund because i ended up selling my canon stuff back then as the adapter wasn't going to be there on time. So despite many emails pinging back and forth i have had no refund from metabones and now i'm met with silence. I have no way of tracking the package back.

I think because there have been several issues with the adapter both physical and firmware then you must apply caution because sending it back and forth is incurring courier and custom charges.

I know that many people have their adapters but i'm very disappointed with metabones as a company, with repeated, polite messaging i have had no recourse. It's now too late to file a paypal dispute as well.

cheers

I ended up buying the canon 17-55 and I do not regret it. A perfect match with the metabones adapter and FS100. no vignetting at all, which it was expected since the lens is used on many C300, and this cam as a larger (marginally) sensor than the FS100.

I'm sorry Paul, I understand your frustration, but I think that the early problems are behind them now. My adapter have the .05 firmware, it is rock solid, no bugs. I even used it a hole day at -20 celcius without any issue.

I think you should try to contact Conurus directly about your specific issue instead of metabones. Try it on twitter or on his forum. He seem to be pretty quick at resolving issues with customers.

Yes, i did email him direct too. I will try the forum. I feel about the only way i'm going to get a response from them will be if i'm a little more public about it which i don't like to do, but for all i know, i may not be alone.

the 1755 is a great lens, i had one. the only issue i had was grindy manual focus but the images were exceptional. As good as the Sony Zeiss zooms i have now, perhaps better in some cases.

cheers

I have the Canon 17-55 EFS 2.8 and a FS100 and Metabones adapter, for me it has worked flawlessly. There is no vignetting, and this is to be expected. In my opinion the Metabones is the best solution right now, it's compact, simple, and relatively a good deal.

I use a tamron 17-50 and i think its a great lens. Wide open, its abit soft but stopped down to 4 and 5.6 its VERY VERY sharp.

Thanks for the responses! Sorry Paul for your experiences with Metabones, I'll keep that in mind if/before I order one. But if I want to use my EF/EF-S lenses on my NEX-7, seems like Metabones makes the best solution.

One more question (and not a terribly important one but would be good to know)... I read that Paul Antico used the EF-S 17-55 on his short "The Cost" shot on the C300. He mentioned that the lens hood would show up in the shot on the wide end. For you guys who have the lens with the hood, has this been on a problem for you on the FS100?

Thanks again for the input, it is really much appreciated!
