Standard Definition and aliasing issues, help!

I've got a shoot Wednesday and it's going to be standard def. I planned on using DVCPro50. It's going to stream to Final Cut on the set and I have been testing that.

I did not have a DVX before the HVX so I am not sure if this is a problem across the product line.

There is alot of aliasing issues around any straight lines lets say 30º from flat level, alot more than I ever expected. The camera is set for 480i/60i Video mode. All other settings were default. Scene file is set to 1.

The picture dances with jaggies when tilting vertically across any horizontal edges, more than I have ever seen in a video camera before. I am used to seeing footage shot in BetaSP or Digibeta. I didn't expect the HVX to be as good as Digi but I was hoping close to SP. This level of aliasing will probably be unacceptable for the client. The picture is very sharp, but the dancing is not gonna work. I tried turning the detail down. First tried -7 to see what that looked like, too soft. Then I set it at -3 and that helped some but not enough.

I then tried 480i/30p mode. Perhaps a subtle difference. However, the clip came into Final Cut, streamed over firewire, as 29.97 interlaced not 30p.

I saw another thread mentioning about using Cinema Tools to conform footage to new rates and tried to conform 29.97 to 30 but I am not sure how to operate Cinema Tools and all it did was break the link from the clip in FCP to the original media. I can relink but it doesn't help with a solution.

Does anyone here have any suggestion that might lead me to a solution?

Thanks for any info..

I have tried turning the detail down to -4 and the verticle detail down -4 as well.
Barry mentioned elsewhere that the verticle detail didn't change the image much so I don't know how much it helped.

However, I think this combo will pass muster. At this point the only jaggies are on patrticlularly bright contrasty objects in the picture and not all over. This looks more like I had expected.

Overall the picture looks really good in the DVCPro50 mode. It's very clean and sharp. Lowering the detail to -4 didn't knock the sharpness down below an acceptable level.

Still, if anyone has any suggestions or info about operating in the standard def mode, please let me know.

Thanks much.

This is the recommendation for HDV cameras and hope to solve the problem. but must be another solution or move the focus point.

Do you have your detail settings at Thick or Thin.
I believe it should Thick.
Thin will give you lots more jaggies.
I think i have that right, if not its the opposite.

The camera is set to thin, which is the default.
I will put the detail back to 0 for a test and change from thin to thick. If that helps, then I can ramp the detail back down again.

Thanks
