Stairway to heaven?

I am using a DVX100A in 24P Advanced mode, shooting onto Panasonic Master DV tapes and then using my firewire port to capture the footage into Final Cut Pro on my Mac. Sometimes I use an anamorphic adapter, sometimes I don't. Sometimes I capture in FCP with the setting set to 2:3:3:2 pulldown mode; sometimes I don't. I've also captured footage into iMovie on the Mac and Pinnacle Studio on the PC.

No matter what I do, it seems that anywhere where there's a sharp edge or line, such as, say, the edge of a black desk against a white wall background, I can see little building blocks rather than a straight, smooth line. I don't know what to call this - pixelation? Mosaic? Tiling? Combing? All I can say is that it looks like a tiny little stairway of building blocks, like little pixels or something, standing there along the edge. I see this in virtually every frame, with every kind of lighting. I see it on my Mac 23" monitor, and I see it on my television monitor and my PC monitor, as well. I can even see it (sometimes) on others' professional video DVDs, when I watch carefully.

I assume it's a resolution issue, and I'm resigned to the fate of just living with it, except the compelling thing to me is that when I watch "The DVX DVD" (the one that comes with a book and is published by Fiercely Independent Films and is currently shipped with the DVX100A), the footage (all of which I assume was shot on a DVX), even when viewed in fullscreen mode, is shockingly devoid of the "stairway effect!" Which tells me that whoever shot that footage (was it Adam Wilt, maybe?) was doing something I am missing, either during the shoot or during the capture or in post.

Is there anyone out there who knows what I'm talking about? Have you seen this "stairway effect" also? Is there a way to eliminate it, other than by giving up on the DVX and going to HD?

Thank you so much for your help on this.

im gonna take a stab and say that this is seen because of the extremely hi-rez that your monitor offers... try connecting your cable or satelite to an NTSC monitor and you notice a lot of imperfections similar to what your describing. most TV's clean the "stairway" effect up because they can't handle the resolution of SD, and the signal that leaves a TV transmitter is compressed and what not which "sands" off a lot of those harsh stairway lines... i dunno.. this is what i think anyway
