Stainless Steel Vs. Carbon Fibre Rods

I did a search and couldn't find an answer. I'm looking to buy some longer rods for my base plate. Some companies offer carbon fibre rods while others sell stainless steel. Is one stronger than the other? I want to know which one is better? Can someone shed some light on this? Thanksi

carbon fiber will be lighter than stainless, but more expensive. Which is stiffer would depend on the wall thickness of the CF and other factors too probably - both are stiff enough for use as rails though. I would get the CF if you can afford it just for the weight savings alone - and CF doesnt rust. Not that you'll be getting your rods wet alot though or leaving them outside... just something to think about.

stainless doesn't rust and is more durable. CF is great for weight but you can damage the surface fibers if you're not careful and then you start to get burring, etc.

you will need to choose based on your intended environment, whether you're going to handheld or on a tripod, rough handling, indoors, etc.

It ultimately depends on the tubing thickness as to which one is stronger, also each of these materials have different structural properties. In this application, the CF will be more rigid and potentially lighter than the steel. It may also be more expensive. Oh, and the CF bling factor... ;-)

The CF for the this length, will have greater structural rigidity and lighter weight. Long story short, you can't lose either way for this kind of application, and other than weight and price, the differences between the two is splitting hairs really. I have carbon fiber, and like 'em.

And oh, Long live the Power Mac baby... :-)

CF will also swell when it is humid, Making it difficult to remove and insert them. Once again take into account the environment your using them in.
