Stacked limiters (DVX100 & SD302)

I lowered the SD302 output limiter thresold to +17 dBu (as recommended by Oleg in another thread). According to the 302 specs the limiter has 20:1 slope which is awfully steep. For that reason I would consider this only an emergency cushion before hitting the wall, so to speak.

If I understand correctly the ALC, the limiter in DVX100, starts from further down and operates less drastically.

So, would it be prudent to have the SD302 limiter cushioning the last 3 dB and ALC smoothing the 10 dB or so before that? Or is it just one or another in this case?

Conventional wisdom is not to use ALC or AGC on a camera, but DO use the 302 limiter to catch the peaks. 20:1 is NOT steep for a limiter. 100:1 is.

You want to make sure that very quick sounds aren't sneaking through the limiter; Handclaps and three-ring binder clicks, for example.

I set my SD 442 limiter threshold at around +16 dB and try just to tickle it so the really quick sounds don't exceed the record level.

OK, if 20:1 is not steep, I could also set the thresold a bit lower. And skip ALC.

Have to study a bit more about these things (I want to understand the numbers...)

the limitter on dvx is behind a to d converter , set up the gain on 302 for 2-4 db lower ( menu)
line up the 0dbu ton for -20 dbfs and you will never clip the input stage before ato d , , then the dvx limmiter would be no relevant at all .
the limmiter work about -6dbfs to -4.5

ty has mistaken ALC for being Auto Level Control on the DVX (as it is on lots of other cams). On the DVX, it is a limiter. And its pretty harmless (in fact, a good thing) to leave it on.

If that's the case, then yes. But if it is behind the A/D converter, as Oleg says, that's pretty much a waste of cuircuitry.
