stablizing

Hi all

I'm new to AE. I'm looking for an effect that will enable me to stabilize wobbly footage. (in AE 7.0).

I know there's an effect to create such a shot, but can I do it the other way around? I need to apply it to a whole scene that was shot without a tripod (long story).

Thanks for your help.

Actually yes, there is. It's part of the motion tracker. Rather than picking track motion you pick stabilize footage. But the trick to it is you need to be able lock onto an object or two and it will stay in place. This won't do you alot of good if you pan around with your camera. Because it will actually lock an object down in place.

But if it's just to take the bouncies and make it a static tipod-esque shot, then it can be done.

Nope, I have no panning. The camera is supposed to stay still on a dialogue scene.

Thank you!!

One more thing. Wne you do this there will be black bars and such on the corners of the scene. You can fix this in one of three ways.

1) Zoom in until they go away. This is ok on a Hi-Def shot but sucks in SD

2) you can use the effect motion tile, mirror edges. This will repeat info into the black bars. This can work sometimes and look dumb others. Also there's a problem if someone or something walks off the shot.

3) and my favorite, repeat your footage and hold the frame on frame one, make a mask of the border of the screen and feather it some. This will make the border of the footage where black bars will appear always have a static image. Once again, doesn't work if someone walks off the shot or something like that.

Play with it, you'll find one that works.

Ask if you get stuck.

Is there any way to just smooth out footage that does pan around? I know some software claims to be able to do this but it seems like After Effects should have something built in.

I have never done stabilizing in AE but have smoothed out panning shots in Shake with perfect results. There are tutorials about it online if you google it. Im sure the same generic rules apply in AE.

I've done all AE asked me to do.

I've created a track point, I've chosen areas who are distinct an stationery, I clicked "analyze forward" and then "apply". and every time i go back to the composition tab, it stays wobbly. The stabilization isn't working.

One thing i'm having trouble with is deciding when to do the "apply". Because at some point during the analyze phase the shot changes. Should I use Apply then? Should I go back and do Apply at some random frame in the needed shot? Am I making any sense?

Well, at least I didn't get any black bars...

With "stabilize" you get 2 tracker points with a white line between them..
Find 2 contrasty objects to track.
Check the "Improof" box
Make sure it is on moovement and rotation
Only track the scene you need.

Make sure you position all 3 elements of the trackerboxes right.
1 Outer box (search area) 2 inner box (track object) 3 the little crosshair (should be in the center of box 2)

Hope that helps,
Frank

If you did not get black bars someting went wrong.

I don't know what "Improof" is. did you mean "Apply"?

I'm putting all the points where they should be, I click where I should be clicking, and nothing's happening. How maddening.

AE is putting a lot of fancy shmancy numbers in the timeline but nothing's actually happening on screen.

Here's what I do again:

1. I choose animation>stabilize motion
2. I go to beginning of shot in the timeline.
3. I check "position" and "rotation".
4. I put one track point on an object in the right side of the screen and one point on the left. There's a white line drawn between them.
5. I click "analyze forward".
6. A few frames before the shot ends, or a few frames after, I click "stop". (it's hard to be precise).
7. I click "apply" and choose X,Y axis.
8. I go back to composition tab to view the shot.

And it stays wobbly. There are no black bars anywhere.
