Squeeze that film look!

Was out today to get some birds, turns out they dont like me, just grabbed the bird bath instead. Did a little CC, wanted to emulate that Ridley Scott dreamish film look.

Just some eye candy.

Hint Hint: Use autofocus to lock down razor sharp images. Even with the EVF and peaking, your just guessing numbers (and i cant afford the marshall right now).

It was a locked down shot, no movement, so the clip pritty much looks exactly like that grab.

Wow. Fantastic. You know, even a 5 second clip of that with a fixed camera and no movement would make my day! :)

looks great -

but i disagree about the autofocus - never use that - it will focus on what it wants to. Using peaking and assist properly you WILL get tack sharp focus on whatever you choose

I like the flies in the background. Oh no, wait, that's camera noise :)

Sorry couldn't resist. I did find the clip very noisy.

Smeini, for motion shots, no, do not use autofocus. However, if you have a static shot, and you dont want to pull out the measuring tape, autofocus is quick and VERY precise. I use peaking and assist and i cannot lock down as perfect of a focus as i can with auto. The EVF is very hard to pull a sharp HD image, espeically in the field.

I suggest you give the autofocus a try, i use it as a extended focus assist, as it comes in handy when i want that image to pop. Do the same test i did.

1) Get an object, get far away from it, go to full telephoto and use focus assist/peaking to lock your image. Hit record.

2) On the same shot, activate the autofocus, give it 2 -3 seconds (or until the distance/feet meter stops moving), disable autofocus, hit record.

- Repeat for variety of shots.

3) Capture into NLE, judge for yourself.

nonetheless autofocus will catch tack sharp on what it chooses - whether the front edge or the back - with assist you can choose and that is most important.

And as i have brought up in other thread you CANNOT use a tape measure with the HVX - according to the Panny manual the distance readout is approximate so assist is better then the tape measure.

But i hear what you are saying - its a different style of shooting - When I shoot a persons face I prefer to choose to focus on the persons iris instead of gambling and maybe getting the lashes.

Doesn't look like a noisy clip at all.. especially compared to some on here. Looks pretty rich and thanks for sharing. Now it's time to get some slow-motion shots of birds in the feeder. I have something similar in my front yard that I"m hoping to get some birds to come and visit.. and then it's pigeon pie.... MUAAAAAAhHHHH

You know it is funny -
With all the discussions over noise and such, I realized that most of the clips for the XLh1 and the JVC are the original .m2t files v. HVX stuff has been h.264. When I look at my original clips v. the h.264 version, I see a lot more noise. Someone should encode some JVC & XLh1 footage into h.264 and it might provide a little better comparison in regards to noise. Also, some have noticed, and I will have to check on this one, but I believe the Component cable signal is more noisy than the captured footage from the HVX. Might also account for some of the noise thoughts here.

Yes, it is.

Disjecta, so far everyone of your posts ive read has been you complaining about noise. I agree there is a noise issue but thats the way the HVX is. If you've ever tried the Canon you will notice it too suffers from a similar noise problem, tho slightly different; ive found its noise to be more blocky and artificial compared to the HVX. Canon Xlh1= blocky/ big noise/ HDV garbage; HVX= sparkly noise. All 1/3" cameras have a similar problem. It wasn't until i saw them competition i shut my mouth. One of my friends who is a producer, purchased the XL-H1 for a TV show, he sold his HVX because of the 'noise problem' and some issue with the zoom speed on the lens. Now, every-time i see him he always tells me how much he wish he never sold his HVX. Truth is ALL these 'sudo' professional cameras have issues. Its gonna be some time before we see anything AMAZING at this price-point. Just look how long it took them to make the DVX!

Ive found the noise more noticeable on my mac then on any PC. I suggest you change your mac elevated gamma to 1 instead of native 1.3- to me, even my varicam footage looks noisy on my cinema display.

Taking all into consideration, YES Noise is a sticky issue. Some like it, Some dont. I can positively say ive found ways to reduce the HVX noise to a point where i find it more than acceptable. It takes a while for one to get use to how the HVX handles light, gradients, and noise, but once you do your off and running- producing images like those above.

No-one will hire you on complaining about cameras or your ability to poo-poo other peoples footage. Instead, use your time and learn how to make a good image, and with DVCPROHD this is what people want to hire. All the 1/3" cameras have noise, show them you know how to master it- Give them something that sets you apart from the crowd. If that means making the image that much more beautiful so you arnt distracted by the noise, then so be it.

But disjecta, thank you for your comments. I value your critique. I will work a little harder to make my image the best thing you've seen.

- I agree. It really depends on what shot your taking. So far on long telephoto stuff ive found the autofucs VERY accurate. Im actually quite pleased with panasonics improvment in this regard.

Thanks man, i did not know this. I can see myself trying to measure the focus and wondering what the heck is going on!

As do i. Shooting a face can be a very tricky thing. Getting that focus right on the iris more than difficult, especially with the superhiphoptillyoudontstopbrocollibeefultrahigh rez LCD and viewfinder. Now i know why some guys are dropping $1200 on the marshal.

Thanks for saving me that tape measure tho!

Did I miss the actual clip ?

I confess; I still dont get this HVX noise thing. I havent seen anything worth objecting about. This grab looks great.

Rhydon.. right on. I feel the same way and realize a few things about the camera and how it's perceived. Thankfully.. ALLL, I might have a very cool thing coming up. Next week, I'm going to key grip a small indi feature and they are slated to shoot with the JVC... which admitedly will be very cool thing to see this camera. He's said it's cool to do some side by side comparison shooting against my HVX. I wish I had access to the canon as well... but weirdly enought I don't know a single person who's bought one locally. Anyone in Florida with a Canon?

WHen it becomes a reality.. I'll post a little someting and ask people for input on what they want to shoot. Personally I want to get the cameras out and shoot my kungfu class to see how it handles motion and rabid pans and all that. We'll see what happens.

I do know one thing too.. The Mid and high gain buttons should NEVER be used. Accendentially it got switched to high gain and then... the noise is so noticable even a client noticed it.... Up until now, no one has commeted upon any noise that they've seen even on my DELL 2405 which shows all the crappy crappy noise. It is something ya have to look for and be a techy.. and most people just looking at the pretty pictures....

Justyn,

Hey, congradulations! That sounds like a really cool opourtunity, Id love to see your results!

Im not going to go into detail about why i didnt pick up the HD100. It was close, too close. But i just couldnt fix myself to accept that motion. Video noise, yeah, if there is any in a shot i can make it look like film grain. But stroby motion? im stuck.

I know what you mean about the gain setting. It is kinda hard to watch a signal with it activated. Ive never found a situation where ive needed to use gain, and i dont imagine i will ever let myself, i dont do so much run'n'gun.

Your righ tho, its all about the pretty pictures, after all this is a camera were talking about ;)

Rhydon, my apologies. I really did not mean to undermine your post. I appreciate you taking the time to do so. I will refrain from any more unnecessary negative posts.
