Squeeze mode

I shot some footage with squeeze mode as a test and when played back on TV it 's stretched horizontally. At what point should I see the letterboxed output, or what should I expect? I'm about to shoot a doc and I'm torn between letterbox and Squeeze. Thanks in advance for feedback.

Re: Squeeze mode

Squeeze is anamorphic 16:9. You have to display it on a 16:9 monitor or capture it to your NLE as anamorphic and drop into a 4:3 timeline to create letterbox for NTSC output. IF you just want the letterbox look and not 16:9 full frame, use letterboxed mode, not squeeze. Squeeze is designed for 16:9 full size output in an anamorpic timeline. Letterbox mode must be stretched via software to get full frame 16:9.

If you just want to get a rough idea of what it'll look like in 16:9 on a standard TV, you can use a TV such as the Toshiba's that have a 16:9 squeeze function. Basically it vertically squeezes the anamorphic output to correct pixel ratio (letterboxes the anamorphic signal).

Re: Squeeze mode

Squeeze will only look proper on a 16:9-shaped television. If you made a widescreen DVD with Squeeze-mode footage and played that on a regular 4:3 TV, the DVD player would letterbox it automatically.

If you're intending on displaying only on 4:3 TV's, you can shoot letterbox mode instead and avoid all conversion issues.

Re: Squeeze mode

Barry pointed out something I forgot to mention. Squeeze is great for DVDs, as the players will auto letterbox. Take the same DVD and display it on a 16:9 TV and you'll get full screen 16:9.

Re: Squeeze mode

Thanks guys....so if I got this right, once I shoot the video in squeeze, I'll edit as usual in FCP( anamorphic) and then it will convert to letterbox(16x9) during or after editing or when I burn to DVD.

Re: Squeeze mode

If you intend to make a DVD from your footage, then you will never convert it to letterbox. You'll author a widescreen DVD using the squeeze/anamorphic footage as-is, and the DVD player itself would handle making the letterbox image.
