Squeeze mode VS Anamorphic adaptor

OK I know that this topic has been beat to death, but I am at the point where I need to make a decision on how to shoot some upcoming productions.

1. What will give me the better resolution SQUEEZE or LENSE?
2. What will be the better end result for the viewer on a set top dvd player and a 16x9 LCD/Plasma type tv?

The reason I ask is because I have a line on a lense for a great price.

Also if you have the lense do you just shoot in regular 4x3 mode or do you have to shoot in letterbox or squeeze?

Any help would be great!!!!

Anamorhpic lens.

2. What will be the better end result for the viewer on a set top dvd player and a 16x9 LCD/Plasma type tv?

Anamorphic lens.

If you can afford the lens and are comfortable dealing with it, it's the way to go. It's just important to weight the cost, focus, and other issues against the convenience of SQUEEZE, since you don't lose a whole lot with SQUEEZE.

Also if you have the lense do you just shoot in regular 4x3 mode or do you have to shoot in letterbox or squeeze?

With the anamorphic lens, shoot in NORMAL 4:3 mode, no LETTERBOX or SQUEEZE. The footage will be meta-tagged as 4:3, so after capture you will need to instruct your NLE to deal with the footage as 16:9, usually through Interpret Footage or something similar.

Normal cinema anamorphics do, yes. But they're discussing the purpose-built Panasonic anamorphic adapter, which is a 1.33:1 anamorphic.

So for something such as live event capturing like sports or dance etc where there would be lots of focus issues, Squeeze might work better than the lense. And the lense would work better for studio controled shooting situations where focus is pre set.....is that a correct assumption?

In squeeze mode, you'll loose about 20% in resolution compared of shooting in 4:3 (non letter-box, just normal 4:3)

This is why cameras with real 16:9 CCD's like the HPX, HVX or HMC will give better 16:9 footages. But this is another story.

I'm really confused here :-@. Here is my understanding:

DVX100B has three shooting modes:
----------------------------------------------
1. Normal 4:3
Gives SD/D1 i.e. 720x576PAL or 720x480NTSC

2. LetterBox
Gives SD/D1 i.e. 720x576PAL or 720x480NTSC + Top&Bottom BlackBar to kill 25% of the footage to mimic a fake anamorphic/widescreen look in SD

3. Squeeze Mode
First LetterBox then Upraise the whole footage to 16:9 (I don't know the resolution here). Weird squeezed preview on LCD will tell you the footage has actually been upraised to some kind of HD.

Now here is the catch, the Anamorphic Lens is meant to throw 16:9 photons onto the CCDs which are essentially made for 4:3 (kind of square shaped), So the actual or maximum field of view for the CCD will be no more than 12:9 (higher form of 4:3) and not 16:9.

To me; the mode must be set to Squeeze with Anamorphic Lens to give CCDs a better chance to upraise the footage to 16:9.

In other words Upraising from 4:3 to 16:9 will introduce more noise artifacts than upraise from 12:9 to 16:9.

What do you guys say :-?

Uh, nope. You shoot NORMAL 4:3 mode with the anamorphic adaptor to get 16:9.

Will this anamorphic adapter have anamorphic lens flares that are horizontal and beyond beautiful? I'm thinking like Star Trek status.

If you can cause some flares, they should be that way. Also, if you can get some stuff out of focus enough, it should also be oval in shape.

However, it's only a 1.33:1 squeeze, not 2:1 like film, so the effect won't be nearly as striking.

I'm embarassed !!!

I'm embarassed !!!

Thanks for correcting. After just wrote that post I went through several stuff and got that I'm not going anywhere but SD. The 4:3 pixels are just stretched to 16:9.

And while exporting from NLE the resolution should be 1280x720p with Square Pixels to really upraised it into the lower bounds of HDTV.

I've heard about the special shooting style to follow to get desired results through Anamorphic Adapter :-?
