Square Front Anamorphics - Where??

Hi I keep hearing people mention the older square front anamorphics that are much cheaper than the current lomo anamorphics that are like 10k$ or whatnot. I am just wondering can someone please tell me more specifically what the square ones are called, where they can be found, how much roughly they cost and what is needed to mount them on GH1?

Thanks

I wish I knew. I think we all wish we knew. I see the square fronts popping up on ebay from time to time. They are rarely 10k though, maybe 1k at most.

yeah that's what I mean the regular round front lomo anamorphics are 5-20k but the squarefronts I heard are much cheaper I just wish I knew how much because the footage I've seen on here with them is breathtaking

I see them pop up on ebay now and again. You just have to keep looking for them. A lot of them come through and have problems though, probably since they are fairly old.

You can find them on the reduser marketplace from time to time as well. I believe Tarkovsky's Solaris was filmed on these.

They come in Oct-19 mount sometimes also. Ciecio has an Oct-19 to 4/3 adapter on ebay that is very nice.

Hey Guys! Sorry to crash the party, but I think I'm going to sell this square front anamorphic lens:

You'll notice that I modified it to fit any lens with a basic stepup ring. You can see that the two lenses in the picture are 72mm (sigma) and 52mm (nikon) No biggie. I have a *MUCH* better solution to bear the weight of the lens now. I don't like that one from India...it's a pain to work with. I'll probably post some footy in the VERY near future. (It might be hard though....as soon as I shoot with it again, I won't want to sell it...so it's a close one there.) :)

Anywho....mad love to DVXUsers everywhere!

The footage looks beautiful HHL! I'm also very interested in how much you would want for this lens. If you still want to sell, feel free to PM me. Cheers.

Homunculus, to answer your initial Q, here are some links:

As you can see Hunter Richards was selling his Anamorphic adapter not so long ago for $600. Grab it before it's gone! I don't think he got a buyer yet, as you can see the footage is sweeet.

And check out Andrew Reid over at EOSHD, he has TWO!:

Hey Peeps! I need some new equipment (dolly, jib), so....I have decided to post this bad boy to ebay this weekend. Just a quick question for all: Do you want the lens support included with the auction or no?

Also...in order to make this thread more than a "drool-fest", I'll post some pics in the next few days of the lens support system that I'm using. It's quick, easy, cheap, and works well for other things too. I had initially bought a support from India....NOT GOOD. (pain to work with) So...this one will be good information for anyone looking at these lenses in the future.

One other thing....OK...so I've owned about 50 anamorphic lenses...(sick I know)....and I can tell you that these (Lomo Square) lenses have been flying under the radar. Modifying it the way I have (easy to do), makes it ULTRA flexible as far as lenses that you can mount IT ON. It's image processing speaks for its self...(look at any footy shot on these things). One of the COOLEST things about this setup is how WIDE you can shoot with it. I was shooting at about 38mm on my Sigma. That is WAY wider than ANY other anamorphic lens that I've shot with. Last, (certainly NOT least) These lenses are 1.5x. If you don't know the difference....*TRUST ME* that is HUGE. Yes...the flares are wicked. Yes....the bokkeh is elliptical...these things are true of MANY anamorphic lenses. The other stuff IS NOT. I know that I'm probably going to REGRET THIS BIG TIME...but...the truth is what it is...and MANY MORE WILL FIND OUT THE SAME THINGS.

Specific to my lens: The glass is NOT CLEAN. I will include every detail in the ebay posting, but know that now. At F22 and F11 it IS VISIBLE. After that, it didn't effect the image. (Sad I know....but 'tis the sad truth) Good luck to all! Watch out for the Square Lomo Anamorphics...they are the BOMB!!
