Spy Master

lovin that set, ted! i'm in a tech theatre class at the university here and it's driving me insane! summer is at my doorstep but i've still got to budget my show, finish my construction drawings, and makeup a calendar for production! aaahh!!!

great work, ted. looks fantastic!

coming to california over the summer? maybe we can meet up again??

Hi David, I will try to do that.

Hey Kyle! Thanks a lot for the kind words. What's driving you insane about theatre tech?

As for a trip to CA, nothing planned yet. Hopefully another trip will not be too far off, though. I am planning a trip out to Oregon and get a chance to meet all of those dvxers up there. But hopefully I will have another chance to hook up with you soon.

Update on more gear.... I just closed the deal on a Bogen tripod set-up. 3191 legs, 3066 head and 3067 dolly! Woo Hoo!!!

Okay, funny story (or at least it made me laugh).

I just mounted my camera on the driver side door of my van and went to take some test footage.

Well, I was only out for 5 minutes and here are the comments...

While driving... "Dude, you have a camera on your car!"

When stopped to adjust the framing... "What are you taking pictures of?" (Um, let's see... we have a camera mounted on my door pointing at the driver... take a guess!

When driving by two skateboarders... "Why do you have a camera on your car?" (and I thought that skateboarders would be "hip" and say "cool" or something. No.)

When driving by the first dope that had yell at me came running up with the followng comment.... "Hey! Take my picture!"

Okay! Well, I see this shoot is going to draw a lot of attention! And I thought that dragging a dead body around (for horrorfest) would draw attention. It did not.

I will post a picture of my rig in a few minutes when I download my photos. But I had to write this right away!

I put on my Porta Brace rain cover to keep bugs from collecting on my camera.

This system is working well. The Slik tripod has a pistol grip/ball head and legs that lock in any angle, making it very useful.

I plan to shoot through the front windshield as well with the rig. I've tested the mounting on it and it works great!

Okay.... more to come...

LOL, Ted! Nice comments from people. Looks like you have quite the set up there! On a side note, I am so happy you are still planning to make the trip to Oregon/Washington this summer. Let me know when you have some dates planned so we can entertain you Northwest style.

Pretty cool Ted, don't drive to close to a telephone pole.
haha! Yeah! You should have seen me WATCHING for oncoming traffic that may veer a little too close to the center lane and such. I was REAL careful. Even made sure not to get too close to my own porch.

The nice thing is, the rig is pretty adjustable. I could bring it all in a little closer to the van but I was trying it at that distance for framing.

Rebecca, Di and I are in the process of planning out trip... you will be one of the first to know!!!

somehow I am very disappointed we're not seeing a ladder strapped to the side of your car...
You know.... I TRIED to make a rig with a ladder.... Just not practical! But I assure you that you will see a ladder somewhere in my bts!

Aram, I knew you where thinking it. :)

I know, I have been working the midnight oils getting gigs and working on my reel for Motion graphics and 3D animation so its hard to get up before 2pm.

Thanks Ralph, Kurt! I have had that tripod since 1990 and used it for my photgraphy. Never was much use for video. But now... it is going to have a whole new life!

More rig photos will surely follow!

Today I meet with the cast and read through the script! (and then I have to go design lights for a Seacoast Idol competition.)

Nice rigg??

The way you do it is hang on to the side of the vehicle then film(realism man), at of course an acceptable speed lets say 45-50 mph...

Chicken

Michael, I will never forget that shot of yours in horrorfest. That was CRAZY!

No... I'll stick to being a chicken with rachet straps and safeties!

UPDATE.......

Just had a read-through with the cast! Very exciting.

We start shooting this Friday morning!!! (gulp! So many things that I have to do before then!!!)

Ted:

I don't know about being chicken and all. I don't think I'd ever trust myself to build my own car rig. Good for you, man!
